Philips Mechanical Design Engineer in Cambridge, Massachusetts

As a Mechanical Design Engineer , you will be responsible for driving Ultrasound Platform innovation, identifying issues in early new product/feature development to improve quality and reduce cost, as well as troubleshooting existing Ultrasound Platforms after production launch. This position is based in Bothell, WA.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the development and release of new Ultrasound systems and product upgrades to improve overall long-term system quality, reliability, yield rates, and cost effectiveness. Includes design-partnering projects and internally designed modules.

  • Support existing Ultrasound systems in production, including root cause analysis of product issues for production and early-life products and determining appropriate resolution.

  • Troubleshoot mechanical issues with system components, PCB’s, and cables; identify root cause and work with suppliers, design partners, and cross-functional stakeholders to resolve the issues.

  • Partner with Clinical Marketing and Industrial Design to understand the competitive landscape, define feature sets and mechanical functionality of Ultrasound System modules, and identify opportunities for advanced development.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders to define clear product requirements that reflect internal/external customer needs, and reliability/manufacturability/quality metrics.

  • Develop high-level and detailed designs to meet product requirements for Philips-designed modules and partner-designed modules.

  • Use SolidWorks to create and modify mechanical architectures, 3D designs, and 2D drawings.

  • Drive effective issue resolution with cross-functional team members, suppliers, and/or design partners.

  • Effectively manage project work in alignment with internal processes and project schedules, including completion of associated process documentation deliverables.

  • Proactively identify and drive continuous improvement initiatives related to design process/implementation, manufacturing process, product quality and reliability.

Job Requirements/Skills:

  • BSME or MSME or related field.

  • 4+ years of experience in an engineering environment required, preferably in medical device development.

  • Demonstrated eagerness to learn, grow, and lead in a collaborative team-environment.

  • Demonstrated excellence in technical leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively and lead/influence cross-functional teams in defining system designs/architectures.

  • Strong leadership and engineering skills/knowledge in product design, with knowledge in part design for Plastics, Sheet Metal, and Die Casting.

  • Expertise in in thermal, structural, and tolerance analyses.

  • Capable of evaluating design margins, tolerances, and reliability factors including, wear, materials strength, chemical compatibility, and compounding environmental effects.

  • Highly proficient in CAD, specific experience and proficiency in SolidWorks required

  • Strong technical writing/ documentation skills for regulated medical device design environment, including translating user needs into design requirements.

  • Demonstrated success in troubleshooting, problem-solving, and driving effective issue resolution for complex technical issues.

  • Demonstrated project management skills and experience with Design Partnering preferred.

  • Knowledge of good design practices and experienced with DFMEA.

  • Self-motivated and efficiently plans, manages, and delivers development work for complex projects in alignment with internal processes.

  • Experience with document control systems (E-Matrix, Agile) and FDA/ISO regulated medical device design environment
