**Role and responsibilities__

SSA seeks machine learning quantitative researchers to join its Portfolio and Risk Research group. This role is responsible for advancing new research, thought leadership, and innovative investment applications focused on the thoughtful use of techniques spanning machine learning, financial econometrics, and related quantitative and data-driven techniques. The individual will work in close coordination with senior and junior team members to develop, test, present, and maintain a robust and varied pipeline of research applications based on machine learning. The focus of this role is on thoughtful use of sophisticated techniques to solve investment problems and prototype new solutions for our clients. While this is not a pure technology role, the qualified individual will need to understand and support appropriate research infrastructure and code, including leveraging capabilities from throughout the company. Specific responsibilities of the position include:

  • Support the team’s pipeline of machine learning applications, managing multiple projects from concept to completion, collaborating with other researchers
  • Prototype new investment methodologies and products for State Street’s institutional client base, focusing on the use of machine learning and financial econometric techniques
  • Formulate and test quantitative research hypotheses with a focus on practical implementation
  • Create a recognized center of excellence for application of machine learning to front-office investment decision challenges
  • Help author white papers and research reports in collaboration with colleagues
  • Develop strong working relationships with sales teams and academic partners
  • Create and deliver exceptional presentations to clients, including CIOs, pension boards, asset managers, and other stakeholders
  • Present research to clients via in-person meetings, conference calls, internal events, etc.
  • Serve as a subject area expert and provide support to internal research groups, as needed
  • Develop and maintain a scalable code base and research infrastructure
  • Act with the highest level of integrity and adopt an owner’s mindset for managing risk in the course of business

**Qualifications__

  • 3-5 years’ work experience in investment management, investment research, data science, or a similar field involving quantitative techniques for data and analysis
  • Advanced degree (MSc, PhD) in a quantitative field such as finance, economics, mathematics, computer science, or a related discipline
  • Expert knowledge of theoretical and practical concepts in machine learning, statistical analysis, time series forecasting, including classical methods and recent developments
  • Familiarity with concepts in investment management, asset allocation, risk management, and investment strategy design
  • Approach research with an open mind and strong intellectual curiosity
  • Ability to present complex ideas in a clear, concise and effective manner
  • Highly proficient coding skills with tools like Matlab/Python/R, with practical experience implementing solutions to real-world problems
  • Experience working directly with databases desired
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills; public speaking experience is desired
  • Prior experience in a client-facing role is desired
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines while maintaining strict attention to detail
  • Willingness to travel occasionally for business
