Astellas is announcing a Laboratory Assistant, Operations opportunity at their Astellas Life Sciences Center in Cambridge, MA.

Purpose:

The Laboratory Assistant helps oversee the day-to-day operations of the ESM lab and facilities. This individual performs a variety of duties including laboratory equipment maintenance, safety management, and general lab stock/inventory maintenance. The incumbent should be a highly motivated self-starter who is mechanically inclined, comfortable working in a hands-on environment particularly in laboratories, and has interest in taking on increasing responsibilities.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate and provide support to the Operations and Research teams to ensure seamless day-to-day laboratory operations, including general lab cleaning/organization.

  • Forecast, order, and maintain stocks of lab supplies and manage inventories.

  • Contribute to the creation and execution of plans to improve laboratory operations.

  • Maintain instrumentation and ensures proper operation. Communicate with instrument companies and schedules maintenance visits. Facilitate renewal of service contracts as needed.

  • Promotes laboratory safety by working with Astellas EHS team and helping execute on EHS initiatives.

  • Manage biological and chemical storage and disposal.

  • Facilitate deliveries of lab gases and handle gas cylinders.

  • Manage upkeep of glassware, including autoclaving.

  • Perform other duties as assigned or special projects as needed.

  • Some clerical tasks/data entry.

  • Assist with physical facility issues when appropriate.

Quantitative Dimensions:

  • Direct impact on regulatory and inspectional performance of the facility.

  • Direct impact on sustainability of building operations.

  • Direct impact on supporting safety and environmental compliance.

  • Works transversally in support of all Astellas functional teams at the Cambridge site.

  • Significant impact on the company’s ability to meet strategic goals with respect to cost, performance, and timing.

Organizational Context:

  • Reports to the Laboratory and Facility Lead, Operations.

  • Partners with Research and other groups to improve internal processes and support building operations.

  • Liaises with Contributor, Environmental Health & Safety to ensure compliance with all local, state, federal guidelines and Astellas global policies.

  • This position has no direct reports.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Education and background:

  • High school or trade School graduate.

  • Four+ years facility experience or equivalent.

  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate functional teams as well as 3rd party service providers.

  • Successful track record for cross-functional facilitation, project management.

  • Strong analytical, problem solving, and organizational skills.

  • Good written and verbal communication skills and experience communicating with all organizational levels.

Preferred:

  • Experience working in commercialized biopharm operation in the facilities operations.

  • Experience in a laboratory setting.

  • Understanding of HVAC, Electrical, and/or Plumbing systems for research facilities.

  • Experience with lighting controls systems such as Wattstopper.
