Reporting to the Director of Research Administration, the JROM oversees the operational support of 14 laboratories, 2 core facilities and 2 nondepartment, tenant laboratories. The JROM also has dotted line reporting and responsibility to a multi-department operations team.

Responsibilities :

Communicates operational activities that impact research labs, including facility shutdowns and upgrades, and building and laboratory renovations; coordinates work schedules with HMS Facilities to minimize impact on research activities.

Works with Campus Facilities to report and resolve building issues; serves as liaison with building managers and construction teams to oversee and maintain department spaces and infrastructure, implement new operational plans and policies, and manage infrastructure shutdowns.

Monitors compliance with federal, state, city, and Harvard University biosafety, fire, occupational safety, radiation, and other regulations and policies; liaison to federal, state and municipal regulatory agencies; oversees controlled substances compliance program.

Serves as Department contact to Procurement, Building Management, Custodial Services, Shipping and Receiving, Police and Security, Office of Sustainability, Engineering and Construction and Facilities.

Department’s Chief Safety/Covid-19 Officer; communicates changes and updates to safety regulations; oversees laboratory compliance with COVID-19 safety procedures and all EH&S policies, including safety training, satellite accumulation area management, evacuation planning and training, chemical and hazardous waste disposal, equipment disposal, controlled substance regulation compliance, and COMS application submissions.

Assists in overseeing a glass washing core of three glasswashers who perform daily decontamination, washing, drying, and sterilization of laboratory glassware; oversees collection and disposal of biological, chemical and other hazardous waste.

Oversees the purchase, installation, use and maintenance of all equipment, including repairs and parts replacement; oversees contracts with non-Harvard vendors and contractors, including equipment service contracts; assists research laboratories with equipment purchases.

Manages building and department access, including Harvard ID; issues and tracks office and laboratory keys, assigns lockers to staff and trainees, and assemblies and installs office equipment; maintains departmental common spaces and supplies.

Serves as backup ROM and for glass washing; occasional availability as 24-hour on-call responder for equipment failures or other urgent, facility matters.

Oversees data entry and database management of personnel through institutional tracking systems such as People in Space; manages service contracts and ensures compliance with University and Federal policies on purchasing, transfer, sale, trade-in and disposal of equipment.

Creates and maintains departmental standard operating procedures in multiple disciplines.

Job Summary:The Junior Research Operations Manager (“JROM”) oversees all aspects of departmental facilities and operations to create safe working environments for research labs, cores and offices. The JROM is responsible for supporting general operations like safety, security, telecommunications, building management, and custodial services and works with Harvard University and Harvard Medical School departments and offices, as well as outside regulatory agencies, to develop and implement them.

The successful individual will have strong communication and interpersonal skills, is organized and able to prioritize and manage multiple issues and can provide stability and reassurance in the face of unexpected events. The individual will develop strong working relationships with the Department faculty, laboratory personnel, office staff members and other colleagues in the HMS community.
