  • A master's degree in learning design, instructional systems technology, instructional design, education technology, or 3-5 years of progressive responsibility and demonstrated success is required.

  • 1-2 years of professional experience as an instructional designer or equivalent in higher education or similar environment is required.

Additional Qualifications and Skills:Instructional Designers have experience creating complex and innovative learning solutions for face‐to‐face, remote, and hybrid teaching and learning environments. Guided by instructional design theory, models, and best practices, the Instructional Designer is a proven team player that has extensive experience in course development. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to interact effectively and tactfully with members of the academic community is necessary. Experience working in an environment where colleagues have diverse background and customs. A keen understanding of, and sensitivity to, the human factors and accessibility requirements involved in introducing educational technology. Demonstrated ability to manage projects and perform under a heavy workload involving a number of simultaneous initiatives. Position requires some evening and weekend work.

Additional Qualifications and Skills

  • Experience in developing instructional design strategies, policies, and procedures;

  • Expertise in developing, evaluating, and redesigning face‐to‐face, fully online, and hybrid/blended courses;

  • Expertise with Zoom for online course delivery;

  • Expertise with one or more learning management systems;

  • Expertise with one or more eLearning authoring tool (e.g., Camtasia, Captivate, Articulate);

  • Evaluation and application of social networking, online collaborative tools, and mobile solutions for education;

  • Experience with web and interactive/e-learning development;

  • Teaching or training experience;

  • Strong presentation skills;

  • Knowledge of both PC and Mac operating systems;

  • Online portfolio preferred (include link in resume/CV).

Additional Information:This position is approved as a term appointment with an end date of 6/30/2022. There is a possibility of renewal/extension.

During the current period of COVID-19 related restrictions, this position may start as a remote position with the transition to Flexwork options that may include onsite at HBS campus in Boston, MA when the office reopens.

  • Consult with faculty and program staff about teaching and learning goals for courses and programs which can be delivered in a number of different modalities (remote, hybrid, in-person);

  • Consult with staff members on how HBS IT-supported instructional technologies can be used to meet administrative needs;

  • Have knowledge of a wide range of instructional technologies and help faculty and program staff choose and implement the ones best suited to meet the identified needs;

  • Develop implementation plan for a range of instructional technologies in a course or program; Coordinate services across the HBS IT and the HBS organization, so that faculty have a central point of service contact for their instructional technology needs (maintaining streamlined and strong customer service for the faculty and programs);

  • Assist HBS IT teams in designing and creating technology solutions that align closely with teaching, learning, and administrative goals;

  • Evaluate new technologies and their ability to meet teaching and learning needs, and HBS requirements;

  • Serve on project teams in designing and implementing solutions that align closely with teaching, learning, and administrative goals;

  • Build effective and trusted relationships with colleagues, HBS IT partners, users, vendors, and developers;

  • Design and create instructional documentation including eLearning, guides, and videos;

  • Develop and deliver individual and group instruction with sensitivity to differing learning styles;

  • Be flexible, open-minded, and comfortable with changing responsibilities and duties as new and additional needs become known.

  • Be responsible for other duties as assigned.

S/he assists faculty and program staff with developing sound pedagogical strategies for developing and utilizing instructional technologies in and across the curriculum for online, hybrid, and in-person delivery. The ID assists in the production and delivery of training materials and end-user documentation on how to appropriately use technology solutions for both academic and administrative uses. Instructional design consultations are grounded in instructional design theory, models, and best practices. IDs must also possess deep experience using web‐based, eLearning/eTeaching tools available to the academic community. The ID works closely with faculty, staff, subject matter experts, HBS IT partners, and vendors to enhance pedagogy and facilitate instructional technology use across HBS. HBS IT partners include Harvard Business School’s MBA program, Doctoral program, and Executive Education programs.
