Head of Research Management Office

Enabled by our recently launched Research Strategy 2.0 within the framework of Play to Win and the 4P’s, we set the roadmap for the Research Organization for the next 5 years. Our ambition is to become a recognized healthcare innovation leader and preferred partner translating world class science and disruptive technologies into impactful medicines in Immunology, Oncology, Neurology, Hematology and Rare Diseases. Thus, Global Research is truly at the core of chasing the miracles of science to improve people’s lives.

Our Research Strategy 2.0 is based on the core DMAT pillars to i) Deliver winning assets, ii) Modernize our discovery machine, iii) Accelerate clinical translation, and iv) Transform the way we work. While we have made tremendous progress on each of those pillars already in 2021, we are now reinforcing the execution of Research 2.0 strategy, supported by some recent organizational announcements.

In this context, PIE (Portfolio Innovation and Excellence) has been recently created in Global Research to consolidate key activities like management of portfolio operations and strategic planning across all research therapeutic areas (TAs) and research platforms (RP) to deliver sustainable truly differentiated First in Class and Best in Class molecules while securing full strategic and operational alignment across Research, Development and Business functions.

A key element in this endeavor represents the Research Management Office (RMO) and we are looking for a new Head of RMO . The RMO leads several highly critical activities, like governance of the Research Leadership Team (RLT), internal and external stakeholder and community engagement, coordination of the implementation of Research 2.0 DMAT strategy and special strategic projects. A qualified candidate must have solid scientific background, decent knowledge of the drug discovery and ideally the entire R&D value chain, strong communication and stakeholder engagement capabilities, outstanding project management / leadership skills and a high affinity and motivation to run cross-functional projects. The Head of RMO will report directly to the Head of PIE and work closely with Global Head of Research and his leadership team in driving our Research organization toward its described ambition, implementing the changes to improve our overall productivity. She/he will be a member of the Research Leadership Team (RLT). The position can be based either in Cambridge / US or Paris / France .

Key Responsibilities:

  • Leading the Research Management Office activities and managing the RMO team (currently 3 positions overall)

  • As the secretary of RLT lead RLT governance and managing RLT meetings by setting agenda’s corresponding to the strategic need, managing the discussions, taking minutes and overseeing follow-up items

  • Driving the internal and external stakeholder and community engagement plan for Global Research (incl. communication strategy on news flow, events and strategy) while continuously striving to improve communication strategy through existing and novel channels

  • Coordinating and driving the communication strategy ensuring the Global and Local research strategy is known and understood in the Research Community.

  • Leading coordination of communication to R&D management bodies, e.g. Board and EXCOM

  • Leading and channeling communication between Global Research and R&D Management Office

  • Creating and leading a PMO network across Global Research to secure alignment across the different functions

  • As a PIE Leadership Team member ensuring proper communication of key RLT decisions to the project teams

  • Under the leadership of the Head of PIE driving the R&D 2.0 DMAT implementation plan across the four pillars, including taking initiative to regularly upgrading and updating the strategy and monitoring progress diligently

  • Operationally driving internal and external global strategic reviews (Deep Dives and Reviews) and Adboards, capturing and communicating outcomes and follow-ups

  • Following the leadership of Head of PIE

  • proposing and monitoring annual Global Research objectives, identify roadblocks, coordinate mitigation strategies and support TAs, RPFs and business partners to elevate relevant items to RLT or Global Head of Research

  • leading Strategic Plan coordination within Global Research across all BPs, TAs and RPFs

  • Leading other cross-functional activities and global events (e.g. Post-Doc program, Global Research Awards, people survey follow-up)

  • Representing Research in key R&D forums related to communication and any transversal activities or implementing initiatives

  • Interfacing with Research Business Partners (e.g. Communication, Legal, Finance, HR, ITS, Digital, etc.) to promote and ensure information flow and alignment

  • Leading learning and scientific exchange at global level for Global Research in close collaboration with the Learning Institute, TAs and RPFs

  • Leading novel initiatives initiated by the RLT to improve collaboration of RLT community and , to promote PTW culture change, or maximize operational efficiency and scientific excellence

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Ph.D. in science strongly preferred; MBA a plus

  • 10+ years working experience in biopharma industry, extensive drug discovery experience or exposure

  • Strong ability to think strategically

  • Strong leadership skills required

  • Great communicator, excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Strong project management capabilities and track record of having lead successfully large global cross functional teams

  • Strong ability to engage with stakeholders; existing global network in R&D is a strong plus

  • Strong interpersonal skills, be able to work and communicate with colleagues at all levels, ranging from senior management, scientists, to administrative assistant

  • Strong ability to getting things done, and to prioritize where needed; multitasking ability required

  • Highly positive “can do” attitude

  • People management experience

  • Ability to constantly challenge the status quo
