Director, Strategic Planning and M&A, Real World Solutions (RWS)

Overview of Role

An exciting opportunity for an individual to work directly with the Real World Solutions (RWS) Leadership Team and support the highest levels of RWS decision-making. The Director, Strategic Planning and M&A will lead the strategic planning process as well as inorganic growth planning and operations to achieve the business’s financial and strategic objectives. This is a global role but much of the work will be centered on the US business. This position reports to the SVP, Artificial Intelligence and Real World Data (RWD) and will also have regular interaction with the President, Real World Solutions and the rest of their Leadership Team.

Key Activities & Responsibilities

Primary responsibility is to own the RWS Global Business Unit’s M&A deal pipeline and select operations to ensure target evaluation and decision-making are conducted efficiently and effectively. Key activities of the role include:

  • Pipeline management: Bi-weekly pipeline reviews for Leadership Team; ensuring relevant IQVIA stakeholders are engaged in deal review; communicating decision-making timelines; and disseminating deal updates and decisions to senior leaders

  • Early stage pipeline development: Market landscaping and target ID; target outreach and exploratory discussions; global coordination and direction for other teams pursuing targets to ensure alignment with strategic plan

  • Target evaluation and due diligence: Introductory meetings, product demos, and partnership exploration meetings with targets; pre-LOI negotiations with target management and owners; business case development with Corporate Development team and deal sponsors; confirmatory due diligence

  • Strategic planning: Inorganic growth planning – capabilities and business segments to prioritize for inorganic growth efforts; GBU segment long-term strategic planning exercises; ad hoc projects for leadership team and President that may include looking at new markets, evaluating competitor dynamics, and supporting C-level partnership / JV discussions with industry collaborators.

To drive RWS M&A and strategic planning activities effectively, this individual will:

  • Run bi-weekly pipeline meetings for Global Business Unit (GBU) President and Leadership Team, understanding and tracking the global pipeline overall

  • Conduct market scans to identify acquisition targets and initiate outreach to explore potential deals

  • Support Global BU and Regional BU leaders in early assessment and preliminary conversations with targets to provide recommendations for pipeline advancement ( i.e. , evaluate for strategic fit and act as “strategic screen”)

  • Evaluate companies for acquisition or minority investment

  • Coordinate and liaise with SMEs to weigh in on target attractiveness and strategic value; own knowledge and judgment dissemination from SMEs in M&A pipeline process

  • Prepare pre-LOI business cases in partnership with Corporate Development, including quantification of synergies, articulation of strategic rationale, and recommendations to executive team

  • Support and lead operational and technical due diligence on specific acquisition targets

  • Make recommendations for acquisition approach, e.g. , acquisition, minority stake, pass on offer

  • Conduct competitive intelligence as relevant to M&A strategy

From time to time, and as capacity allows, this individual will be asked to lead special projects. In the past these have included segmenting and sizing the market for AI/ML use in healthcare, researching and presenting on regulatory changes that may impact IQVIA’s data access strategy, and acting as a Strategic Business Development resource in structuring and executing strategic-level commercial / JV agreements.

Education, Experience, and Attributes Required

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent; MBA preferred

  • Demonstrated high achievement in strategic operations roles, strategic planning, VC/PE, or investment banking

  • Experience in either the Pharmaceutical industry, the Payor industry, the Provider industry, or the Healthcare technology industry

  • Strong business judgement and ability to comply with very high standards of confidentiality

  • Ability to synthesize facts / content to get to the “so-what” for an executive audience

  • Strong interpersonal, networking and communications skills (written and oral) and ability to build strong, effective relationships with senior leaders

  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks simultaneously to meet deadlines

  • Presence and credibility to engage and influence senior leaders across multiple geographies and functions

  • High levels of intellectual curiosity and a desire to “soak-up” the breadth of knowledge that one is exposed to in the role

  • Experience in preparing business cases or investment recommendations

  • Knowledge of IQVIA’s Real World Evidence offerings and market strategy a plus

  • Basic understanding of Corporate Finance a plus

  • Very strong PowerPoint, Excel, and Word skills.
