Sanofi Group Director, Global Market Insights, Rare Diseases/Rare Blood Disorders in Cambridge, Massachusetts



The Director of Global Market Insights for Rare Diseases and Rare Blood Disorders is a unique cross franchise and multifunctional role. This insights leader will be responsible for leading market research as well as global competitive intelligence activities across two teams. This position will report to the Commercial Excellence Lead for Rare Diseases (RD) with a dotted line to the Rare Blood Disorders (RBD) Commercial Excellence Lead. It will be based in Cambridge, MA.

The purpose of this position is to provide customer and competitive insights to the commercial teams through conducting market research studies/analyses and landscape monitoring that will help drive key strategic and tactical decisions. This position will develop and execute market research plans, clearly communicate research results and findings, and contribute to franchise planning. The key CI components of this role will include proactively tracking and synthesizing the competitive environment, analyzing threats and opportunities, and working with cross functional partners to provide insights to help guide the short- and long-term strategies, including brand planning.

This position will collaborate with the commercial teams, medical affairs, market access, and other key stakeholders. The position will ensure effective communication of actionable market insights and competitive intelligence findings to the expanded RD/RBD teams, and smooth coordination of efforts with other support functions.


As a combined CI and market research leader, the Director of Global Market Insights will be expected to:

  • Manage projects within budgets, schedules and corporate, legal and regulatory requirements, and strictly adhere to relevant policies and SOPs.

  • Integrate findings from additional data sources (including other primary research, secondary data, syndicated reports, competitive intelligence, etc.) in interpreting results to provide proper context for findings.

  • Develop and refine results to address specific audiences and clearly communicate findings to all relevant stakeholders. Translate findings to actionable recommendations.

  • Provide significant brand planning leadership. Regularly contribute to setting commercial and brand strategy, making actionable recommendations grounded in insights from market research and business data.

Market Research (50%)

  • Work with commercial team to align on key priorities for the market research effort, re-evaluating and adjusting as needed. Ensure key strategic and tactical business questions are addressed.

  • Work with other support functions as necessary to ensure efforts are coordinated to address business questions with all relevant information and support related strategic efforts (e.g., forecasting, performance reporting, competitive intelligence).

  • Define appropriate methodology for market research projects, consistent with business goals.

  • Review and select recommend appropriate primary and secondary market research agencies consistent with procurement policies.

  • Direct, develop and review all research materials (discussion guides and screeners, surveys etc.) to ensure validity of research. Provide input as necessary to marketing and agencies in development of materials for testing.

  • Manage fielding to ensure proper execution. Attend field research as necessary to ensure quality and smooth execution and develop direct knowledge of findings.

Competitive Intelligence (50%)

  • Lead Global CI activities by bringing proactive key competitive intelligence to leaders within the commercial organization that will reduce uncertainties and guide optimal business decisions.

  • Legally and ethically monitor, gather, analyze, and communicate actionable, reliable intelligence on the competitive environment including company messaging, pipeline/R&D, life cycle management, and predicted strategies and tactics.

  • Ensure appropriate intelligence and value-added insights are captured and disseminated throughout the commercial organization, including regular intelligence briefings and early warning alerts.

  • Work in close collaboration with the commercial teams, other related market insights functions and forecasting to create and maintain up to date key intelligence topics and develop a prioritized implementation plan to provide best solutions.

  • Collaborate with other market insights related colleagues to synthesize internal and external information, analytics and data to arrive at value added conclusions.

  • Manage external vendor(s) to proactively maintain appropriate levels of market intelligence coverage.

  • Lead Congress CI efforts and provide key competitive insights before, during and post congress.

  • Be an integral member across the Sanofi Genzyme Competitive Intelligence community to establish and share best practices and work to continuously to improve the intelligence process at Sanofi Genzyme and Sanofi


  • 12+ years of relevant pharmaceutical industry experience, including at least 7 years of primary market research or competitive intelligence experience

  • Experience effectively collaborating within a matrix environment and with colleagues across functions and geographies.

  • Results-oriented creative thinker who is viewed by clients as a collaborative strategic business partner with an ability to influence leaders 2+ levels above in organization

  • Demonstrates ability to maintain objectivity and willingness to “take a stand.” Upholds high standards of ethical and intellectual integrity.

  • Excellent communication skills with a well-developed ability to communicate efficiently and productively both verbally and in writing.

  • Demonstrated excellence in project management and effectively managing multiple demands from multiple internal customers.

  • Superior analytical skills with proficiency in a broad range of primary marketing research methodologies including qualitative and quantitative design, data analysis and statistics.

  • Global experience and relevant market experience in Immunology, Rare Diseases and or Rare Blood Disorders strongly preferred.

  • Knowledge and experience with pharmaceutical data sources (e.g., prescription and sales data, patient claims data, promotional audits)

  • Consulting experience preferred
