Generation Bio Director, Corporate Communications in Cambridge, Massachusetts

Company Overview:

Generation Bio is an innovative genetic medicines company creating a new class of gene therapy utilizing our proprietary non-viral gene therapy platform to provide durable, redosable treatments for millions of patients living with rare and prevalent diseases. Our non-viral gene therapy platform incorporates our high-capacity DNA construct called closed-ended DNA, or ceDNA; our cell-targeted lipid nanoparticle delivery system, or ctLNP; and our established, scalable capsid-free manufacturing process. Using our approach, we are developing novel gene therapies to provide targeted delivery of genetic payloads that include large and multiple genes to a range of tissues across a broad array of diseases. We are also engineering our gene therapies to be redosable, which may enable individualized patient titration to reach the desired level of therapeutic expression and to maintain efficacy throughout a patient’s life.

We are initially focused on rare diseases of the liver and retina with significant unmet need for which our non-viral gene therapy platform may substantially improve clinical efficacy relative to current gene therapy approaches. We plan to expand our portfolio to include rare and prevalent diseases of the skeletal muscle, the central nervous system, or CNS, and oncology by developing discrete ctLNPs, each engineered to reach a different tissue. We believe our non-viral gene therapy platform may also allow patients to produce antibody therapies from their own cells for years at a time from a single dose, and plan to advance antibody gene therapy programs across multiple therapeutic areas.

Position Description:

Generation Bio seeks an energetic and versatile leader to play a key role in developing and executing our internal and external communications strategies. The successful candidate will ensure alignment of the communication strategy with Generation Bio’s core values, goals, vision, and mission. He/she will manage employee communications and engagement as well as external communications, thought leadership, media relations and social media initiatives. The position requires strong storytelling skills with the ability to translate highly scientific and technical information about our platform and the therapeutic potential for various audiences.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Develop and execute a comprehensive external communications strategy for Generation Bio to build brand awareness and grow a deeper understanding of our platform and therapeutic potential, working closely with the leadership team and investor relations colleagues

  • Manage updates needed to corporate messaging based on evolving data, revising and updating company key messages, corporate presentations and website to ensure accuracy and reflect current state

  • Manage all media relations activities, building and maintaining relationships with key reporters and identifying opportunities for proactive outreach

  • Identify topics and provide review/editing of byline pieces by leadership team members

  • Develop and execute press release plans that are aligned with key company milestones and events

  • Identify thought leadership opportunities and provide support of speaking engagements

  • Develop and manage a proactive social media strategy, working with external communication and design partners, as appropriate

  • Project manage the details and logistics of communication initiatives, working with external communication and investor relations partners, as appropriate

  • Develop employee engagement activities and communications that are aligned with HR strategic initiatives and company values

  • Collaborate with leadership to ensure message alignment across all communications

  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills, with ability to translate highly scientific and technical content for various audiences

  • Ability to lead at all levels of the organization

  • Excellent project management skills with high attention to detail and ability to manage multiple initiatives at once

  • Ability to work effectively and collaborate across the organization

Skills and Competencies:


  • Minimum of 10 years of communication experience with a bachelor’s degree in Communications (or related field)

  • Experience managing communications for a public company, preferably in the biotech industry

  • Working knowledge of pharmaceutical development and gene therapy a plus

  • Experience managing high-profile communications issues, demonstrating sound judgment and persuasive counseling to senior management
