City of Cambridge Animal Control Officer in Cambridge, Massachusetts
The Cambridge Animal Commission facilitates programs for animal control and welfare in the city and maintains Cambridge as a safe environment for people, pets and other animals, through an educational and enforcement approach. Within twelve (12) months of hire, must complete training required per MGL Chapter 140, Sec 151C. Regular duties include but are not limited to the following: Enforces state laws and City ordinances pertaining to animals; including issuing violation notices as needed Rescues and transports healthy, injured and/or sick domestic pets and wildlife; including responding to citizen requests for services regarding animal bites, loose animals, barking or dangerous dogs, and injured animals Ensures that proper care and attention is provided to all animals in the Cambridge Animal Commission?s custody Licenses all dogs in the City of Cambridge Appears in court for Clerk Magistrate?s hearings and/or trials Investigates disputes involving animals (domestic or wild) Maintains relationships with other public service organizations, municipal governments and the community in relation to the Animal Commission?s responsibilities and objectives Follows animal control adoption policies for unwanted animals Prepares and writes reports relative to incidents or enforcement issues Performs related duties as required MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: High School Diploma or equivalent required, Associate Degree in Animal Science or related field desirable, Completion of Animal Control Officers of Massachusetts Core Competencies course desirable Minimum of one year in animal welfare/control, must have knowledge of animal capture and handling techniques Valid driver?s license required Demonstrated skill in animal health care and first aid treatment of injured and diseased animals Knowledge of and interest in the human treatment of animals and euthanasia of sick, unwanted, injured or unclaimed animals Understanding and interest in the enforcement of animal control/cruelty laws Demonstrated knowledge of MS Word, Excel and Access and the ability to understand programs that already exist in the Animal Commission office Demonstrated effective interpersonal communication and strong mediation skills, maturity of judgment and capacity to perform under pressure and in emergencies Must have completed the ACOAM Academy for Animal Control Officers or must complete within twelve (12) months of hire. As a condition of employment, the employee will be required to receive a Rabies Vaccination to protect the individual from exposure to the rabies virus. PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT: Combination of indoor office and outside work environment with exposure to all weather conditions at all times of year Repetitive lifting between 10 ? 150 lbs. climbing, bending, crawling, squatting, stretching, pushing and pulling Ability to climb a ladder Will frequently use animal control equipment that will require quick moving motions to keep an animal controlled and placed in a cage or kennel Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.
