Tufts Medicine Compliance Specialist in Burlington, Massachusetts

The Compliance & Internal Audit department audits, investigates and educates about compliance related matters that include a) billing and documentation requirements, b) physician and vendor relationships, c) regulatory compliance policies and regulations, d) data integrity and e) internal controls. The Compliance Data Specialist assists with various risk assessment, audit & monitoring, data analysis, and education/training activities to assist with compliance with federal and state laws, regulations, and priorities of the Compliance and Internal Audit department.

The Compliance Data Specialist is a valuable member of the team who will grow personally and professionally in our multifaceted department. This position will have strong organizational, time management, critical thinking and problem-solving skills to manage a variety of projects in a fast-paced environment. The Compliance Data Specialist works under the general direction of the Senior Director of Data Integrity & Privacy and will also promote the Tufts Medicine’s Code of Conduct and raise awareness regarding standards for ethical behavior.

The intent of this job description is to provide a summary of the major duties and responsibilities of this position and shall not be considered as a detailed description of all the work requirements that may be inherent in the position.


  • Assists with supporting all seven elements of an effective compliance program, as defined by the Office of Inspector General (OIG), to provide a comprehensive, effective and efficient compliance program for the organization.

  • Assists with data protection, auditing and monitoring activities and other data related reviews to verify compliance with applicable standards, organizational policies and procedures, and federal, state and local laws, statutes and regulations.

  • Contribute to Compliance & Internal Audit Department initiatives, such as managing the completion status of education and training initiatives (e.g., annual compliance training, new hire compliance training, etc.), monitoring and sharing regulatory changes, updating the compliance work plan, creating quarterly newsletter content and engaging employees during Corporate Compliance & Ethics week.

  • Create and contribute to meeting materials (e.g., handouts, graphs, minutes, etc.) and participate in compliance subcommittee meetings, when applicable.

  • Serve as a backup administrator for software tools used to identify and analyze comparative data and reporting (e.g., hotline, compliance incident management, etc.). Provides training on the tools to the Compliance & Internal Audit Department, as necessary.

  • Conduct investigations of alleged compliance incidents, develop corrective action plans for the resolution of problematic issues and track, monitor and report on all investigation outcomes.

  • Develop and maintain audit work papers, review documentation provided for audit purposes, and prepare written content for reports.

  • Aids in the development of education and training materials to foster awareness and understanding of and promoting adherence to data integrity and protection initiatives. Prepares reports as necessary regarding training and follow up attendance.

  • Maintains compliance with benchmarks and deadlines, and prepares written reports of audits. Ensures accurate tracking of all incidents and investigations in the online issue management system.

  • Accurately prepares agendas, minutes, and meeting materials for compliance related committees and any other assigned meetings in a timely manner.

  • Aids the compliance data team in maintenance and preparation of reports on organizational compliance and privacy program metrics and key performance indicators (KPIs) regarding effectiveness and efficiency

  • Researches laws, regulations and guidelines and helps to distribute updates as appropriate to operations personnel, as requested.

  • Maintain confidentiality and proper sharing of information of all materials handled within the organization.

  • Completes other duties assigned by the Senior Director of Data Integrity & Privacy accurately and timely.


  • A Bachelor’s Degree in a healthcare related discipline, business, or management information systems, or another equivalent is preferred.

  • Certification in Healthcare Compliance (CHC) desired, or willingness to obtain

  • 1-3 years’ experience relating to healthcare compliance

  • Ability to function with limited assistance within a fast-paced, dynamic and growing environment.

  • Motivated self-starter with demonstrated attention to detail and strong personal accountability.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects and duties while delivering accurate, concise, timely, exceptional and thorough work products that require no more than minor revisions.

  • Demonstrate strong analytical, critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

  • Excellent computer skills (e.g., Internet, Microsoft Office, Epic). Advanced Excel skills are desired.

  • Proven experience working in highly confidential environment with ability to multitask and manage competing priorities

  • Complies with Tufts Medicine and departmental policies regarding attendance and dress code.

  • Attends meetings, training and in-services as required.
