Nonprofit Finance Fund Strategy Senior Associate - Boston, MA in Boston, Massachusetts

The COVID crisis and the uprising for racial justice have shone national light on both the urgent work required to build a more just and vibrant society for all Americans and the potential for positive action when our communities mobilize. We have also celebrated the ?heroes?, who primarily work in nonprofits delivering essential services like affordable housing, social justice advocacy, health, youth development, to the arts. Yet these nonprofits continue to rely on a flawed, inequitable funding system that often impedes their ability to make a difference. Nonprofit Finance Fund is setting out to change that. We are a nonprofit lender, consultant, and advocate with 40 years of experience committed to reforming the nonprofit funding system. We know that financial knowledge and access to appropriate lending products are power for nonprofit leaders. We are now evolving our strategy to focus on helping to shift funding and financing practices so more money flows equitably and with less restriction to community-centered organizations led by and/or serving people of color.

Position Summary:

The Strategy Senior Associate will work directly with the CEO and Executive unit to advance NFF?s strategic shift to be an anti-racist organization serving community-centered organizations by driving organization-wide strategic initiatives and a high-functioning Leadership Team. The Strategy Senior Associate will possess exceptional communication, execution, and analytical skills; and the interpersonal savvy to work effectively with a broad range of staff and external partners.

Working with the CEO and Executive unit, coupled with a cross-sector team of NFF colleagues across business units and offices, the Strategy Senior Associate will help ensure continuous organizational improvement in support of NFF?s strategic evolution. The Strategy Senior Associate will:

  • Have day-to-day ownership of supporting the process of strategic change at NFF, including external research and synthesis, supporting the development of presentations to staff, Board, and external stakeholders, and financial modeling of scenarios for NFF?s evolution over the next five years

  • Engage with and support the Leadership Team that implements cross-cutting strategic priorities with accountability and best leverages the CEO?s time, influence, and insight

  • Support CEO and NFF?s business development team in external networking with potential partners, funders, and investors

  • Work collaboratively to educate all NFF staff about this evolving work (including by coordinating engagement with leading external partners)

  • Engage with and support Leadership Team in representing NFF through public speaking and writing opportunities

This position can be based out of any one of NFF?s office locations which are in Boston, Los Angeles, New York, Oakland, and Philadelphia. (Though we are currently working remotely and will not require attendance in any office until 2021 at the earliest). The Strategy Senior Associate will report to the CEO.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

Strategy

  • Work collaboratively with the CEO and Executive team to support cross-cutting initiatives that advance the strategic shift

  • Support CEO and Executive team in working with business units and Board to set targets for strategic evolution and in ensuring accountability to meet them

Business development

  • Support CEO in working with colleagues on the resource mobilization team to develop and implement a funder outreach plan to raise flexible grant and investment capital to support strategic evolution

Relationship Management

  • Builds relationships with internal staff and external partners and clients to develop and maintain visibility of NFF?s strategic initiatives

  • Provide CEO and Executive Team with fact-based reporting as to current developments and needs within the business units

  • Liaise with all levels of staff and leadership in this endeavor

Board engagement

  • Support in Board engagement including preparation for Committee and full-Board meetings

Essential Requirements for Education and/or Experience:

  • Proven experience in project management and translating bold vision into practical organizational change agendas driven with proactive planning and clear accountability

  • Prior experience working with organizational leadership teams and change management initiatives

  • An effective communicator able to synthesize complex information and convey to non-expert audiences effectively

  • Committed to, and skilled in advancing racial equity in the United States and the agency of people in marginalized communities to define and realize their aspirations

  • Highly empathetic and self-aware

  • Comfortable and effective in winning the trust of diverse groups of colleagues, clients, and other partners

  • Able to effectively manage people and projects toward time-sensitive goals and outcomes without relying on formal reporting authority

  • Relentless in seeking ways to add value and comfortable when goals inevitably shift

  • Able to balance outrage at injustice with optimism about our ability to overcome it while maintaining a positive attitude

Specialized Knowledge/Beneficial Skills and Experience:

  • Experience designing, executing, and adapting new and existing business models

  • Strong communication skillset and recognized sense of self-awareness and EQ skills

  • Typically, individuals able to perform at the Senior Associate level will have at least 5-7 years of relevant experience

  • Deeply curious about social sector innovation

  • Experience with financial analysis and/or investment

  • Management and oversight of cross-cutting initiatives

  • Lived expertise navigating social services as a client

  • Ability to think outside the box to solve problems creatively and drive innovation

  • Appetite and aptitude for dealing with the uncertainties characteristic of a dynamic, entrepreneurial environment

  • Excellent communication skills to convey complex information appropriately to stakeholders with different backgrounds and needs, both verbal and written

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate with confidence and in a direct, honest, and respectful manner; provide feedback to, and receive feedback from, managers and peers

Compensation

At NFF, we are invested in discussing the depth and breadth of each candidate?s background and experience during the interview process and using that information to determine the best offer. The salary range for this position begins at $ $69,000. NFF also provides an attractive benefits package that includes health insurance, retirement plan, paid time off, standard holidays, and commuter benefits.
