The Staff Software Engineer will make vital contributions to the New Product Development (NPD) pipeline and transform patient care through innovation. They are responsible for working with our NPD teams to design and development product software for use in cutting edge medical devices and associated capital equipment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and develop embedded product software to integrate with mechanical, electrical, and distributed computing systems.

  • Develop and/or customize board support packages (BSPs) for hardware.

  • Collaborate with the hardware team on PCBA design activities and in hardware debugging

  • Use knowledge of embedded board level designs to bring up new devices and lead debugging of low-level system software and device drivers.

  • Develop test tools to test product software in an integrated environment.

  • Translate high-level customer needs into technical options while analyzing trade-offs and business impact.

  • Convert chosen technical options into formal testable written requirements.

  • Document designs and specifications per design control processes.

  • Collaborate with vendors throughout the design and development process

  • Use Agile software development methodology as part of daily software development activities

  • Mentor junior members of the engineering staff to expand design team abilities and establish good working practices.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related discipline is required; advanced degree preferred

    Experience & Skills:

    Required:

  • Minimum 7 years experience in a direct software engineering or software architectural role in a New Product Development environment

  • Proven experience with embedded electrical and software design

  • Firmware experience that includes BSP management, driver development and debugging, low-level systems software design, and experience with electrical test equipment

  • Experience with board bring-up, bootloaders, system clock configuration, GPIO, and/or driver development (i2c, SPI, CAN, touch controller, network interfaces)

  • Experience developing software for embedded Real-Time Operating Systems (QNX, Embedded Linux, GreenHills, VxWorks)

  • Experience developing embedded software systems in C, C+

    • Work experience with Systems Engineering activities: requirements management and development, risk management, and verification (e.g. Enterprise Architect, Integrity, JAMA, DOORS, etc.)
  • Demonstrated ability working across subject areas with internal and external partners

  • Experience with protocol connectivity over Ethernet Networks, LAN, WAN, Cloud

    Preferred:

  • Experience with Distributed Data Services (DDS), e.g. (RTI Connext, OpenDDS, MQTT, CANopen, or similar distributed data sharing libraries)

  • Embedded software development in Modern C++ (C++14) and Python

  • Experience with Xilinx development tools (e.g. Vitis, Vivado, etc.)

  • Domain expertise with security hardware and firmware (TPM, etc.)

  • Experience within a medical device or other highly regulated environment

  • Experience with external standards such as IEC 62366, IEC 62304, or IEC 61508

  • Experience developing Qt applications and/or Qt QML plugs

  • Solid understanding of system modeling techniques (EA, Rhapsody, etc.)

  • Proven ability working with system-level tools and processes used for issue tracking and test automation (e.g. Google Test, NUnit, JUnit, etc.)

  • Creation and management of interface control specifications for electrical, software, and mechanical systems
