The Boston University Stable Isotope Laboratory is a regional center for stable isotope analysis. We seek a client-oriented individual to serve as Manager and Instrument Specialist for the Stable Isotope Laboratory. The Lab manager is responsible for the operation of the Laboratory, which includes running samples submitted by members of the Boston University and larger research community on the isotope ratio mass spectrometers, analyzing data, giving expert advice and support on issues relating to mass spectrometry to all users of the facility, and carrying out consultancy activities to generate income and promote Boston University. The manager is also responsible for user training and maintaining the instrumentation, the oversight of quality control procedures, and financial planning. To the keep the facility sustainable, the manager must attract samples for isotope analysis from outside the Boston University community and help or lead submission of equipment grant proposals. The manager with work closely with the Directors to ensure smooth operation of the Laboratory.
Key Responsibilities:
Facility Management, including- 1) Methods development, 2) Ordering supplies, 3) Invoicing and Billing, 4) Serving as Lab Safety Officer, 5) Interacting regularly with Laboratory Directors, 6) Helping prepare grant proposals to support the lab
Provide maintenance on equipment, including troubleshooting and fixing problems associated with broken equipment and coordinating service calls by service engineers.
Complete sample analyses, including setting up instrument for automated analysis of samples and analyzing manual samples that are not appropriate for automated processing.
Complete data analysis and data reduction, including ensuring quality control of data. If requested, discussion and analysis of data as it pertains to ongoing research.
Develop and undertake consultancy activity for stable isotope analysis, to diversify the Laboratory user base and generate additional income for Boston University.
Provide practical training for service users on instruments within the Stable Isotope Laboratory.
Deliver training and support to students using the isotope ratio mass spectrometers, including graduate, postgraduate, and undergraduates.
Required Skills
Master's degree or above, along with 5-8 years of relevant work experience.
Advanced analytical, project management, computer, technical, and equipment operation skills and experience.
Excellent office, administrative, communication, and customer service skills.
Ability to physically move supplies and equipment around the lab.
Experience running isotope ratio mass spectrometers.
The Stable Isotope Laboratory seeks a candidate who is highly organized, meticulously detailed, and able to multi-task. Successful candidates will be able to work independently, but also be comfortable working directly with the Laboratory Directors to ensure smooth operation of the facility. This is a full-time, in-person, 12-month position. After 90 days of work, consideration will be given for up to 1 day of remote work per week.
