The Discovery Pharmaceutical Science group based in Boston, Massachusetts is seeking a Senior Scientist.

Discovery Pharmaceutical Science is a multi-disciplinary research group that provides drug delivery, solid-state, solution chemistry, and formulation tools in Drug Discovery and Early Drug Product Development. You will be responsible for the characterization of potential pre-clinical drug candidates' physicochemical properties and the identification of suitable oral and parenteral preclinical formulations for pharmacology and toxicology studies across a variety of administration routes and modalities (small molecules, peptides, proteins, oligonucleotides, and biotherapeutics).

In this exciting role, you will provide support to our discovery therapeutic areas based at our multi-disciplinary drug discovery site based in Longwood. You will also dedicate time to building support for our Exploratory Science Center based in Cambridge, Massachusetts which is focused on the earliest stages of discovery research. Finally, you will also closely interact with other key functions required for the progression of clinical candidate selection including Safety Assessment, Process Research, Analytical Chemistry, Drug Metabolism and Pharmacokinetics.

Responsibilities include executing lab research in the following areas:

  • Molecule profiling for both small and large molecules

  • Early formulation screening for stability and performance

  • Development of prototype and concept formulations/drug delivery which would benefit the molecule given its therapeutic area.

  • Research areas include solubilization, inhalation, targeted delivery, intracellular delivery, and modification of drug release.

  • Execution of physical and chemical methods (X-Ray Diffraction, Thermogravimetric Analysis, Differential Scanning Calorimetry, Dynamic Vapor Sorption, High-Performance Liquid Chromatography, High Performance Size-Exclusion Chromatography, Differential Scanning Fluorimetry, Dynamic Light Scattering, Microscopy).

  • Limited travel to scientific conferences and broader Pharmaceutical Sciences department meetings (< 5%)

Position Qualifications:

Required Experience and Skills:

Successful candidates will have a minimum of a Bachelor’s with a minimum of 7 years relevant experience OR a Master’s with a minimum of 5 years relevant experience OR a PhD with less than 1 year of relevant experience.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required. Strong leadership/interpersonal skills and a motivation to work in a team environment with cross-functional interactions are essential.

Preferred Experience and Skills :

Candidates with experience in pre-clinical / clinical formulation development and physico-chemical characterization are preferred. Candidates with specific experience of drug delivery for immunology and microbiome applications including the delivery of novel modalities are also preferred.
