The Boston University Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) department is seeking a Health and Safety Program Manager to join our dynamic team. The Health and Safety Program Manager assists the Director of Clinical Operations in providing comprehensive leadership, programmatic management, and facilitation for assigned safety programs and initiatives as well as serving as an EHS subject matter expert. The position is responsible for designing, developing, implementing, and overseeing EHS's clinical and medical campus health & safety, life safety, and construction programs to safeguard students, faculty, staff, patients, and the environment. The Program Manager coordinates improvement activities across multiple academic, clinical, and operational departments, serving as a highly visible and energetic champion of employee safety throughout the organization. This role requires daily interaction with staff and senior leadership at both the hospital and medical campus. Critical thinking and decision-making skills are essential. This position is primarily based on the medical campus.

The ideal candidate will be responsible for ensuring a safe and healthy work environment across BU’s Medical Campus including Boston Medical Center, with a focus on Joint Commission required safety rounds, construction, and general industry workplace safety practices. This position is primarily based on the Medical Campus while remaining flexible in assignments across all areas and departments served by EHS.

Job Responsibilities

  • Implement and manage health and safety programs: including hazard surveillance inspections, fire safety, construction, and the maintenance of all necessary permits for regulatory compliance including inspections by the Boston Fire Department and the Mass. Department of Public Safety.

  • Conduct comprehensive inspections and risk assessments to identify potential environmental health and safety hazards.

  • Develop and implement strategies to mitigate identified risks, ensuring a safe environment for students, faculty, staff, patients, and visitors.

  • Design and deliver comprehensive health and safety training programs for hospital staff on environmental health and safety procedures.

  • Establish and maintain hospital policies adhering to local, state, and federal environmental health and safety regulations. This includes staying current with health & safety best practices, standards, and regulations. Provide briefings and training to EHS supporting staff on institutional policy and health & safety programs. Provide briefings on changing standards and regulations and emerging legislation.

  • Collect and analyze data from hazard surveillance inspections, external audits, corrective actions, fire drill performance, and incident response to monitor the effectiveness of safety programs. Recommend and implement improvements to enhance safety performance to ensure a culture of safety of continuous improvement. Generate reports and present to EHS leadership and safety committees.

  • Participate in the EHS on-call program and provide emergency response guidance to EHS staff in response to BMC and medical campus incidents. Assist the hospital emergency management program in planning for emergency response exercises to prepare hospital staff in incident response.

  • Regularly review incident and employee accident reports to mitigate hazards. Review near miss and injury data to identify trends. Recommend corrective actions and implement improvement strategies.

  • Review construction project scope and develop construction safety plans. Advise project managers on compliance with applicable local, state, and federal standards and codes, and institutional policy. Provide construction safety training to stakeholders, as necessary.

Required Skills

Required Skills:

  • B.A./B.S. in a related field, master’s degree preferred.

  • 5-8 years of environmental health and safety or related experience

  • Experience in conducting health and safety audits.

  • Familiarity with health and safety standards and building code.

  • Experience with regulatory inspections.

  • OSHA HAZWOPER 40-hour Certification.

  • Valid driver’s license.

  • Basic computer skills (business systems, Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

  • Proficient communicator and safety trainer.

  • Successful completion of a pre-placement physical.

Preferred Experience:

  • Works towards an advanced degree in related field.

  • Health and safety experience in the academic, research, or healthcare industry.

  • A health and safety certification (ASP, CSP, CHSP, CIH, CHMM).

  • Experience in construction safety.

  • Experience in leading emergency management exercises or fire drills.

  • Experience in managing health and safety permits and licenses or other required documentation.

  • Experience in compliance inspections with external regulators.

  • Experience in incident and accident investigations.
