Overview

The Physical and Computational Sciences Directorate (PCSD) researchers lead major R&D efforts in experimental and theoretical interfacial chemistry, chemical analysis, high energy physics, interfacial catalysis, multifunctional materials, and integrated high-performance and data-intensive computing.

PCSD is PNNL’s primary steward for research supported by the Department of Energy’s Offices of Basic Energy Sciences, Advanced Scientific Computing Research, and Nuclear Physics, all within the Department of Energy's Office of Science.

Additionally, Directorate staff perform research and development for private industry and other government agencies, such as the Department of Defense and NASA. The Directorate's researchers are members of interdisciplinary teams tackling challenges of national importance that cut across all missions of the Department of Energy.

Responsibilities

The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) seeks a PhD intern in applied mathematics with the focus on development and implementation of randomized linear algebra algorithms. The candidate should have background in applied mathematics (i.e., numerical linear algebra or probability). The candidate should have experience or interest in scientific software development. The candidate will contribute to the software development. The emphasis will be given to efficient parallel implementation of randomized linear solvers. The candidate must be adept at collaborating and have strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

• Candidates must be currently enrolled/matriculated in a PhD program at an accredited college.

• Minimum GPA of 3.0 is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Strong skills in computational mathematics and algorithm development.

• Proficiency in C/C++ and Matlab or Python.

• Experience with parallel programming (i.e., MPI, OpenMP, CUDA, HIP).

• Experience with software version control systems (such as Git).

• Experience with software development.

• Experience with randomized and mixed precision computational linear algebra is a plus.

• Publication record in scientific conferences and journals such as SIAM and IEEE journals is a plus.
