Pathology Operations Director

Department Description:The Department of Pathology is involved with the diagnosis of cancer and other major medical conditions through the gross and microscopic examination of tissue samples obtained from surgical procedures and endoscopy (Anatomic Pathology).

Our department also provides clinical laboratory services to the hospital as well as consults in the areas of clinical chemistry, hematopathology, microbiology, and transfusion medicine (Clinical Pathology). Affiliated with Harvard Medical School, the Department of Pathology conducts research (linked )in the further characterization of disease processes and trains (linked text) the next generation of pathologists. Job Summary:The Pathology Department Operations Director provides strategic operational leadership, supervision and direction regarding clinical, regulatory, safety and patient/employee satisfaction within the Hospital operations of the Department of Pathology. The incumbent works closely with the key administrative and clinical stakeholders across the organization to ensure operational excellence aligned with BIDMC & BILHS values and goals. Working in partnership with the Chief Administrative Officer, Vice Chairs, and lab management team, the Operations Director will lead teams to ensure high quality laboratory operations, regulatory & and safety compliance, and oversight of over 300 FTEs. Responsible for 15 FTE management direct reports.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • As part of the senior lab management team, participates and leads in strategic planning for the Department.

  • Provides operational direction and supervision of the Department's lab management teams including: Lab managers, Safety, Compliance, POC, and QA.

  • In collaboration with the lab management team, responsible for laboratory operational policies and procedures for the Department.

  • Leads the department activities to meet the standards of regulatory requirements with all pertinent agencies (i.e., CAP, AABB, TJC, OSHA, DPH, etc).

  • Ensures effective human resources management within assigned areas to best achieve and maintain quality services and positive employee relations and a productive and engaged workforce.

  • Advise all department personnel on laboratory issues. Holds regular department leadership meetings and ad hoc staff meetings as necessary to ensure communication of programs, policies, procedures, initiatives, questions and concerns. Supervises and mentors managers and other leaders as necessary.

  • Working with the lab manager provides oversight and direction to ensure the effective utilization of test costs and expense.

  • Has the authority to direct and support managers with functional area responsibilities. Has the direct responsibility to undertake the following employment actions: hiring, termination, corrective action and performance reviews. Direct Reports: More than 7 Indirect Reports: More than 100

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Science or Baccalaureate in Biology or Chemistry required. Master's degree in Business Administration preferred.

  • Certificate 1 ASCP Registered preferred.

  • More than 10 years related work experience required in progressive experience within a large clinical high volume laboratory and 3-5 years supervisory/management experience required

  • Ability to analyze complex tasks, systems, issues and find solutions and deficiencies.

  • Ability to be creative and analytical in developing in implementing system-wide organizational changes.

  • Advanced skills with Microsoft applications which may include Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Access and other web-based applications. May produce complex documents, perform analysis and maintain databases.
