Aerotek Naval Architect in Boston, Massachusetts
Plans, coordinates, and works with other Naval Architectural Engineers performing design work and administering design and construction contracts for landing craft projects, including craft availabilities and boat alterations.
Provides technical advice and expertise when aspects of the work become problematic.
Coordinates and provides advice and review in the analysis, evaluation, conduct of feasibility studies, cost estimates, and resolution of complex technical problems associated with the plan, design, and development of advanced engineering systems and equipment that support Landing Craft construction projects.
Responsibilities & Duties:
Performs Hull form and hydrodynamic performance, including development of hull form geometry and lines plans, hydrostatics and curves of form, resistance and powering estimates, propulsor design and performance, appendage design, maneuvering analyses, seakeeping analyses, development of model test plans and observing and analyzing data from model tests or full-scale trials.
Reviews and edits technical manuals and drawings.
Conduct weight and stability analyses, including development of weight and center of gravity estimates, performance of intact and damaged stability analyses, performance of deadweight surveys and inclining experiments.
Conduct concept and feasibility design studies addressing whole ship sizing and performance analyses, requirements validation, and design optimization.
Perform design integration, coordinating inputs from various naval architectural and other engineering disciplines, such as marine engineering and structures, into balanced, closed solution designs to establish principal characteristics and design features such as length, beam, depth, draft, displacement, speed, and other performance parameters.
Structural design, developing hull girder bending moments and structural configurations and scantlings in accordance with appropriate rules or design standards, development of superstructure, mast, and local support structure to withstand primary and secondary loads.
General arrangements and configuration, developing requirements for area and volume, preparing overall ship arrangement concepts and drawings illustrating primary functional allocation of spaces within the ship considering location and adjacency constraints, performing special studies including access and line of sight analyses, assisting in detailed layouts of individual compartments such as living and berthing spaces, ship support spaces, storerooms, and shops.
Assists with the review of design proposals and specifications.
Participates in scheduled project review sessions and meetings with representatives from other engineering disciplines and customers on technical and engineering issues.
Prepares documentation, reports, and project plans to describe activities planned and accomplished, status reports, letters, memoranda, messages, and contact reports.
Performs additional duties and responsibilities as assigned.
In some cases, educational requirements may be adjusted or waived for equivalent work experience.
Work experience may be adjusted for highly specialized knowledge or uniquely applicable experience for positions involving new technology or labor market shortages as reflected by market survey data.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
Experience with AutoCAD, Photoshop, and MS Office is required.
Ship Constructor software experience is desired.
Ability to lead a small team, and to analyze successes and failures for clues to improvement, and to tackle new and difficult challenges is the key to success in this position.
Advanced knowledge of naval architecture to perform routine analyses and prepare naval architectural deliverables in support of the design of ships, craft, and other floating structures.
Strong written, verbal communication and computer skills including various types of engineering software.
Ability to design and provide the highest quality products and services that meet the needs and requirements of internal and external customers.
Education : Bachelor’s Degree Naval Architecture or related engineering field such as Ocean Engineering plus 5 to 7 years of relevant experience.
Travel : Yes (projected to be 10% of year).
Citizenship is required.
Clearance : Active Clearance.
