Dana-Farber Cancer Institute National Media Relations Manager in Boston, Massachusetts

The National Media Relations Manager will help build Dana-Farber’s reputation and visibility by maximizing the Institute’s profile in the national and international media. Reporting to the Director of Media Relations, this position is an integral part of Dana-Farber’s in-house Department of Communications.

The National Media Relations Manager will lead an energetic, proactive outreach program to engage top-tier reporters and influencers across the nation and the globe to illustrate how its world-renown scientific research and patient care are leading the fight against cancer.

The successful candidate will have relationships and demonstrated success working frequently with traditional news media reporters, editors and producers, and with online communications channels and influencers.

  • Develop and manage strong working relationships with the top reporters, editors and producers.

  • Identify breaking news and trending stories with opportunities for Dana-Farber faculty involvement.

  • Partner with clinicians and researchers to produce news releases and other assets, promoting Dana-Farber’s scientific leadership.

  • Prepare appropriate faculty and staff for media interviews, as needed.

  • Develop opportunities for Dana-Farber faculty to interact with national reporters and influencers at some high profile medical meetings – ASCO, AACR, ASH, etc.

  • Support social media engagement with the scientific community to complement the traditional media outreach.

  • Support the Director of Media Relations and help coordinate staff in urgent communications situations.

  • Analyze appropriate relevant national trends in media coverage.

Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

  • 10+ years experience in media relations (health care or biotech preferred)

  • Strong understanding of the national media and established connections with top-tier health reporters, editors, outlets and influencers.

  • Deep knowledge of health care and biomedical research.

  • Ability to understand complex scientific information and translate it to layman’s language.

  • Excellent written and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to use media relations software and databases.

  • Ability to work effectively in a highly matrixed and complex organization.
