Guardian Life Manager, Underwriting in Boston, Massachusetts
The Manager, Underwriting is accountable for leading a team of skilled underwriters in Guardian’s 1000+ segment. This role reports to the Leader, Underwriting and will support Guardian’s overall growth and profitability goals by driving high levels of performance through coaching, motivating, and ensuring the technical skill development of team members. Additionally, this role will be responsible for the underwriting of complex, high profile cases (prospective or inforce), demonstrating a mastery of advanced risk evaluation concepts and appropriate pricing practices.
You will:
Support leadership of the 1000+ underwriting team, including managing workflow, case assignments and staffing.
Meet or exceed sales goals at profitable pricing levels and meet or exceed renewal rate and persistency targets against profitability measures.
Independently evaluate the application of Underwriting judgment, pricing decisions, and pricing strategy.
Oversee the underwriting skill growth of the team, ensuring each team member has a solid technical underwriting foundation. Additionally, you will ensure that each team member (both direct and non-direct reports) has a strong development plan, that progress towards development objectives are on track, and that we are meeting succession planning needs.
Develop and support a culture of high performance and talent excellence, through effective recruiting, training, coaching, motivating and developing staff as well as supporting diverse talent initiatives.
Drive a culture of collaboration, accountability and engagement amongst team members.
Partner broadly with other areas of the organization including: Sales, Client Management, Product, Pricing, Implementation, Legal, Compliance, and Claims to bring in new customers and service them and existing customers well.
Actively engage in supporting the positive consultative outcomes crucial to our long-term success, identifying opportunities to provide consultative creative solutions and making recommendations.
Continually challenge the status quo, developing efficiency and operational improvements through process changes. You will proactively lead change throughout the Underwriting Team and will serve as a key contributor to projects and thought leadership within Underwriting Leadership, the entire Underwriting organization, and Guardian.
Build rapport with internal and external partners, including other departments within Guardian, producers, plan sponsors and their members to enhance Guardian brand, and improve new business results and inforce business retention and profitability.
Handle a caseload of complex accounts (prospective or inforce), assessing risk related to insurance products and ultimately recommending appropriate pricing levels.
You have:
7+ years of Group Underwriting experience
Extensive knowledge of group contract and benefit provisions, along with industry trends and competitive pricing practices for all product lines
Excellent written and verbal communication skills along with strong presentation skills
Superior organizational, time management and prioritization skills
Excellent math and analytical skills
High degree of comfort with the MS Office suite, including Excel, Word and PowerPoint
Bachelor’s degree or higher, preferably in business, economics, finance or mathematics
Travel: Approximately 10%
Location: Hybrid role - 2 days in the office, 3 days WFH - Preferred locations- Guardian home offices located in Bethlehem, PA, New York NY, Stamford CT, Holmdel, NJ - or in a Guardian sales offices located in Atlanta, Chicago, Boston, Newport Beach, or Piano/Dallas. We will consider candidates outside of preferred locations, offering flexible work arrangements if aligned.

Salary Range
$81,040.00 - $180,600.00
The salary range reflected above is a good faith estimate of base pay for the primary location of the position. The salary for this position ultimately will be determined based on the education, experience, knowledge, and abilities of the successful candidate. In addition to salary, this role may also be eligible for annual, sales, or other incentive compensation.
