Alexion Pharmaceuticals Manager, Strategic Finance in Boston, Massachusetts

Position Summary

Alexion’s Strategic Finance team’s primary purpose is to provide insights and analytics that shape business and investment decisions made by both Alexion’s Executive Leadership Team and Alexion’s Operating Committee. Strategic Finance team members provide an important connection point between Corporate Strategy, Global Finance, Commercial Operations, Business Development, and R&D Portfolio Strategy.

The Strategic Finance Manager will fulfill a critical role on the team by partnering closely with the Business Development team to help assess deals and partnerships. This person will participate in interactions with professionals outside of the company, including investment bankers, VC partners, external consultants, and management from other companies.

The primary focus of the role includes developing company valuation models and designing presentations that highlight risks and opportunities. The Strategic Finance Manager will then use these financial models to develop scenarios and sensitivities that support term negotiations, portfolio prioritization, strategic planning, and other types of decision-making.

As such, we are looking for someone with at least 5-6 years of professional experience with a corporate finance, strategy, consulting, or investment banking background. Key skills required are financial modeling, presentation development, ability to manage up to supervisors, and effective communication. The position will provide ample opportunities for career development through exposure to Alexion leadership, new business units, and potential for rotation after 2-3 years within Finance and Business Development.

Principal Responsibilities

  • Develop and control financial models to support business development, M&A pro-forma analysis, and asset / company valuations

  • Perform comparable company and transaction analysis to support financing strategies for licensing and acquisitions

  • Build 3-statement financial models for Alexion and external companies

  • Conduct asset and partnership valuations which show sensitivities to deal terms and support negotiation strategy

  • Collaborate with commercial development team to formulate forecast assumptions and market assessments

  • Analyze corporate structures and valuations of comparable biotech and pharmaceutical companies for executive management

  • Organize and present research analyst estimates and investor positions

  • Participate in efforts to source and execute large-scale licensing and acquisition transactions that support long-term growth and discovery at Alexion, including managing relationships with investment banking advisers, assessing venture capital portfolios, and evaluating pipeline opportunities at other pharmaceutical companies


  • 5-6 years of experience in strategic finance position, including Corporate Finance, Investment Banking, Corporate Development, Portfolio Assessment, or Investment Management

  • Experience in Pharmaceutical/Biotechnology mandatory

  • Outstanding ability to deliver reports and presentations to senior management

  • Great computer skills, including Microsoft Excel, Power Point, and Word

  • Excellent problem solving and organizational skills

  • Flexibility and ability to adapt to changing conditions and different cultures

  • Autonomous

  • Entrepreneurial spirit


  • Bachelor’s degree required, MBA and/or CFA viewed favorably

  • Coursework in finance, strategic management, and general business is strongly recommended

  • Demonstrable accountability through high GPA and extra-curricular participation
