Cengage Learning Legal Operations Privacy Project Manager in Boston, Massachusetts


The Legal Operations Privacy Project Manager supports the Legal Operations department in building and maintaining the Company’s Privacy Office related tasks and functions. With limited direction, this position is responsible for assisting the Privacy Program Manager in promoting a culture of compliance and understanding of applicable federal, state and local rules and regulations, as well as company policies as they relate to compliance, ethics and privacy. The Privacy Project Manager is responsible for ensuring the successful planning, execution, tracking, delivery and closure of Privacy related projects.

What You'll Do Here:

  • Assist the Legal Ops team and the Privacy Program Manager in the identification, implementation and maintenance of the company’s Privacy policies, communications, trainings, and procedures

  • Assist in identifying and tracking relevant privacy regulations, and evaluate their applicability to Cengage

  • Under limited direction, manage various Privacy related projects and initiatives to successful fruition. Works with other Legal Operations team members to determine scope and direction of projects. Solicit stakeholder participation and approval where required.

  • Ensures that projects are completed within acceptable timeframe and within budget

  • Monitors project progress, budgets, technology, assesses risks and track multiple project timelines and/or work streams

  • Communicates project status to stakeholders/division leadership throughout the duration of the project and post implementation to make certain all impacted stakeholders understand risks, issues and activities

  • Monitors and updates project information, creates documentation, reports, and related work throughout the project lifecycle

  • Ensures assigned duties and responsibilities/project results are completed with quality and are timely and accurate in nature, in order to meet leadership expectations

  • Assist in identifying industry standards and best practices relating to Privacy

  • Assist in the development and delivery of, and be responsible for ongoing maintenance of Privacy related training for the organization

  • Work closely with the Privacy Program Manager to develop and maintain privacy policy and notices content, including SharePoint pages and web content. Draft, proof and update documentation, correspondence, agreements, policies, and communications.

  • Collaborates cross-functionally across the enterprise and division to ensure appropriate response to internal and external requests for reports and/or information are complete and provided in a timely manner

  • Coordinate requests for the changes or updates to customer PI, including “right to be forgotten” requests

  • Assist in systems and process development to improve processes and capabilities, and to create efficiencies

  • Performs day-to-day functions to support the successful operation of the department and division and support the objectives and goals of the department and division

  • Performs other duties as assigned to meet Legal department goals

Skills You Will Need Here:

  • Minimum 3 years of previous project management experience with demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and priorities

  • Strong experience and well versed in information privacy laws, access and release of information in a corporate environment

  • Knowledgeable in Privacy requirements, particularly in the US and the EU

  • Demonstrated skills in problem-solving, communication, organization, and facilitation

  • Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines

  • Proficient with PowerPoint, Word, Excel and SharePoint editing or development

  • Independent self-starter and detail oriented

  • Comfortable multi-tasking and working in a fast-paced dynamic environment, maintain composure under pressure and have a high degree of perseverance

  • Energetic with a high level of stamina

  • Well-organized and self-directed individual who is "politically savvy" and a team player that can work effectively with individuals that have diverse work styles and approaches

  • Strong process orientation

  • Comfortable receiving and responding to requests on an unplanned basis with a fast response time

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to effectively communicate with all levels of staff members in other functional groups

  • Ability to work collaboratively and in partnership with other functional areas to obtain project status information

  • Drive for continuous improvement; can adapt readily to change and help facilitate process changes

  • Prior experience supporting Legal department services and projects preferred

  • Prior experience in a Privacy based department or organization preferred

  • Systems design or project management experience preferred
