Boston University LABORATORY SUPERVISOR, College of Engineering, Mechanical Engineering in BOSTON, Massachusetts

Boston University's Engineering Product Innovation Center (EPIC) (https://www.bu.edu/epic/), a 15,000 square foot, multimillion-dollar prototyping and engineering manufacturing space located in the heart of BU's Charles River Campus and serving over 2,000 students annually, seeks a new Laboratory Supervisor with a passion for engineering education and a commitment to teaching both undergraduate and graduate students. Successful candidates must feel comfortable with the design and iteration process. Part of the role requires coaching on various design topics such as material selection, tool selection, fastener selection and systems design. Another part of the role requires coaching on how to use the equipment in EPIC to fabricate components. Teamwork, a can-do and positive attitude, and a commitment to continual learning are essential traits of a successful candidate.

This position is responsible for:

  • Working with students, researchers and faculty to execute their hands-on projects. This involves skills in operating the equipment in EPIC, training students, and providing design feedback.

  • Having expertise in the equipment in EPIC as well as electromechanical systems.

  • Equipment operation, inventory, student worker supervision and training, maintenance, equipment upgrades, educational programs, and student safety.

  • Identifying new technology and manufacturing methods that can be integrated into EPIC.

  • Outreach to the various hands-on classes, clubs and groups that could use EPIC and work with the groups to identify and create projects.

Required Skills

A cover letter is required for consideration.

  • Bachelor's degree required with 5-8 years of experience.

  • Candidates with a technical background, equipment operation, such as casting, welding, milling, turning, laser cutting, injection molding, metal forming, finishing, and wire EDM preferred.

  • Some projects will involve both electrical and mechanical components.
