Wellington ESG Associate, Private Investments in Boston, Massachusetts

Working closely with the Director, ESG, Private Investments, the ESG Associate, Private Investments (the Associate) will be responsible for supporting the execution of our private investment ESG strategy alongside the deal teams as they evaluate private company investments. The Associate will help integrate material ESG factors into portfolio company research, diligence, decision making and engagement.

In partnership with the Director, ESG, Private Investments and/or the private investment team, responsibilities will include:

  • Working with deal teams to assess ESG-related strengths/weaknesses of potential portfolio companies and identifying areas where we can engage to encourage improvement over time.

  • Engaging with existing portfolio companies to enhance ESG practices and developing a system to communicate and report these efforts to Limited Partners.

  • Supporting late-stage companies as they prepare for IPO, offering a full ESG review of their businesses and how the companies may be ultimately received by public market investors.

  • Developing ESG thought leadership and participating in webinars to inform private portfolio companies on emerging ESG trends, including evolving investor expectations and developing regulation.


The following essential skills are required for the role:

  • Investment acumen and passion – We are seeking an Associate who is passionate about financial markets and sustainability issues and can apply expertise across these dimensions to the private investment process. The ideal candidate will bring a general understanding of governance topics and environmental and social issues, and how these issues can impact an investment thesis in the private markets.

  • Superior collaboration and influencing skills – The successful candidate will enjoy contributing to a highly collaborative investment environment and will embrace the benefits of overlapping lines of idea generation. S/he will build strong trusting relationships internally with colleagues and externally with company leadership teams. The ability to provide a point of view and challenge the status quo is critical, as is the humility to admit mistakes and a desire to learn from others; s/he must recognize the benefits of diverse perspectives. The ability to communicate (both verbally and in writing) action-oriented business solutions and investment recommendations clearly and with conviction and contribute to an open sustainable dialogue is important.

  • Growth mindset – The flexibility and openness to continue learning, evolving, and growing as an Associate. S/he will have a creative approach for thinking about innovation and the rapid evolution of sustainable investing.


Additional qualifications and individual characteristics include:

  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in a related role and interest in the private markets

  • Strong work ethic and attention to detail;

  • Ability to set priorities, execute a research agenda, manage projects and contribute to optimizing ESG within the private investment team on an ongoing basis;

  • Capacity for differentiated thinking and ability to problem solve effectively;

  • Excellent written, oral and interpersonal communication skills;

  • Strong interpersonal skills and experience in a collaborative, team-based, results-oriented environment;

  • Independence of thought, intellectual curiosity, and an entrepreneurial nature;

  • Global perspective; and

  • Strong academic credentials: advanced degree/CFA preferred.
