About the Role:

We seek an engineering leader to lead a high-performing and dynamic team responsible for building, maintaining, and scaling APIs as well as critical programmatic interfaces, like CLI and Terraform, for our company's products. The team is dedicated to empowering our customers and developer community through these tools and fostering strong community engagement with contributions and overall user experience. As Confluent grows its product portfolio, these programmatic interfaces will become increasingly vital in attracting and retaining the company's developer-centric customer base, driving product adoption, and fueling overall company growth. Your leadership will be critical to delivering governance for APIs, ensuring world-class quality and consistency across all interfaces. You will guide the team in significantly contributing to source-available CLI and Terraform projects, effectively prioritizing tasks to align with company goals. Your leadership will foster a collaborative environment, drive innovation, and maintain high development and management standards

What You Will Do:

  • Lead the strategic vision and execution of essential programmatic interfaces, ensuring the delivery of superior APIs and interfaces for Confluent products that meet global standards.

  • Collaborate with product management, design, and other engineering teams to define product roadmap and technical strategy.

  • Deliver high impact to the business by driving product adoption and ensuring our programmatic interfaces are aligned with developer needs and preferences.

  • Establish and maintain a robust governance framework for delivering world-class public APIs across the product portfolio.

  • Foster a strong community around our open-sourced tools, actively engaging with developers to prioritize feature requests, bug fixes, and contributions.

  • Work with engineering teams and products on critical aspects of product definition, architectural design, and delivery.Influence the overall domain health and operational hygiene for the Cloud Platform.

  • Champion engineering excellence through process improvement and technical leadership.

  • Measure and analyze team and product performance to identify opportunities for improvement.

What You Will Bring:

  • 10+ years of experience in software development and 2+ years in management.

  • Experience in building and designing resilient systems at scale using hyperscale CSPs (AWS, Azure, GCP), with a proven track record of “seeing around corners” to reduce complexity and create critical enduring technical foundations.

  • Demonstrated expertise in designing, building, and scaling APIs and programmatic interfaces (CLI, SDK, Terraform).

  • Understanding API governance frameworks and best practices for ensuring API consistency, security, and reliability.

  • Ability to influence the team, peers, and upper management using effective communication and collaborative techniques.

  • Ability to hire while ensuring a high hiring bar, motivate engineers, coach/mentor, and manage performance.

  • An excellent track record of timely shipping features, a sense of urgency, an aggressive mindset toward achieving results, and excellent prioritization skills.

  • Bachelor’s or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent experience

We analyze and carefully consider several factors when determining compensation, including work history, education, professional experience, and location. This position has an annual estimated salary of $211,770 - $230,310, an annual bonus, and a competitive equity package.
