Job Profile Summary
This role focuses on activities related to the support services functions, such as dietary and food services, environmental services, general facilities, repair and maintenance, parking, sterilization and transportation to ensure all required support activities are completed in a timely manner and meet the organization's quality standards and expectations. In addition, this role focuses on performing the following General Facilities, Repair & Maintenance duties: Operates, monitors and maintains, troubleshoots, repairs and replaces facilities mechanical components and systems such as electrical equipment, HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) and plumbing. A management role that supervises employees focusing on tactical, operational activities within a specified area, with the majority of time spent overseeing area of responsibility, planning, prioritizing and/or directing the responsibilities of employees. Goal achievement is typically accomplished through performance of direct and/or indirect reports. A role that supervises para-professional employees. Responsibilities that typically include: Setting day-to-day operational objectives for team, problems faced may be difficult but typically are not complex, and ensures policies, practices and procedures are understood and followed by direct reports, customers and stakeholders.
Job Overview
Responsible for all technical aspects of construction and repair all types of electrical systems and equipment. Responsible for the training and technical outcomes of all shop personnel. Responsible for cost estimates and budget performances for a shop staff.
Job Description
Minimum Qualifications :
High school diploma or equivalent.
Graduate of a recognized electrical school.
Certificate of Registration as a Journeyman Electrician.
Five (5) years of experience as a Journeyman Electrician in a Healthcare facility including three (3) years of experience leading a crew of Electricians.
Duties and Responsibilities : The duties and responsibilities listed below are intended to describe the general nature of work and are not intended to be an all-inclusive list. Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned.
Assigns and schedules work activities of subordinates, ensuring that calls are responded to quickly and accurately.
Determines materials and supply needs, ensuring they are available in stores or ordered; and, prepares detailed cost estimates of requisitions and projects, including man hours and all applicable costs
Coordinates job scheduling with all levels of personnel in the hospitals, including shutdowns of electric service and generator testing.
Trains all personnel within shop to broaden skills regarding the electric distribution network, tele lift, pneumatic tube, nurse call system, and fire alarm system.
Provides input to physical plant manager for employee performance reviews and recommendations.
Works with mechanics on tolls and electric testing devices.
Regularly inspects work completed by own shop and work done by outside contractors to ensure compliance with plans and specifications as well as with National Electrical Code and NFPA regulations.
Provides cost estimates and recommends solutions to manager for problems with other departments.
Maintain the electrical distribution network including: Low voltage applications such as data processing cable, telephone network cable, fire alarm system, emergency lighting, battery packs, switch-gear controls, nurse’s call stations, overhead page and intercom systems, Johnson Control wiring and FPU, antenna system and cabling.
Maintains the high voltage applications such as: NStar incoming to switchgear and transformers, electrical panels, motor control centers, electric motors, automatic transfer switches, lighting fixtures and ballast, power factor correction capacitor banks, uninterruptible power supplies, emergency power generator testing, radiology equipment power and installation, line isolation monitors and floor conductivity tests for the OR’s.
Maintains electromechanical systems such as tele lift, pneumatic tube, laboratory equipment, surgical lights, kitchen and cafeteria equipment, trash compactor and conveyor belt, hazardous waste grinder.
Provides support for other trades for motor starters and heaters, pumps, in\house tool repairs, surgical equipment repairs.
Coordinates the installation of new systems and/or equipment so as to exceed the electric loads that can be safely transmitted by the existing electrical distribution network. This includes NStar electric power, as well as the capacity of the emergency power generator system.
Troubleshoots all power and control systems, including the use of diagnostic equipment and outside service vendors as necessary.
Provides assistance in rescuing people from failed elevators and secure the same until the elevator service mechanic arrives on site. Maintains the elevators in accordance with items not covered in the elevator service contract (lighting, fire alarm interaction).
Assists manager by coordinating the work of an assigned group of employees. Relays work instructions and distributes and monitors work. Provides technical training and assistance. Assists in ensuring employees are provided with appropriate resources. Provides recommendations for the most efficient utilization of assigned personnel. May provide employee performance information and report employee performance issues.
Maintains collaborative, team relationships with peers and colleagues in order to effectively contribute to the working groups achievement of goals, and to help foster a positive work environment.
Physical Requirements:
Moderate physical effort is required with considerate time on feet and climbing ladders.
Frequent exposure to dangerous high voltages, sick patients, laboratory test animals and occasional exposure to fume hood exhausts when working on rooftop exhaust motors.
Frequent exposure to dust, hot and cold temperature, and mechanical rooms which may contain high-pressure steam and sewage ejectors.
Negligible exposure to radioactive materials except when working in laboratories.
Frequent contact with employee around work areas as well as in patient rooms.
Skills & Abilities:
High level of analytical skills solving extremely complex problems required due to exposure to a wide range of systems and equipment.
Ability to properly use and operate power and hand tools. This includes analytical devices.
Ability to read blueprints and electrical schematic diagrams and make recommendations for cost effective and code complying changes.
Ability to work under pressure. Attention to detail required for accurate results in order to maintain a safe environment.
Communication skills required in order to relay electrical needs/requirements to the layperson.
Ability to be available to the hospital on a 24 hours basis when emergencies or planned shutdowns are experienced.
Ability to orally communication complex technical problems to all levels of employees within the Hospital.
