Alexion Pharmaceuticals Director, US Communications in Boston, Massachusetts

This position can be based from Boston, MA or be remote/virtual, based anywhere within the United States and may require up to 20% travel to existing Alexion sites.

Position Summary

The Director of US Communications leads all external and internal communications for the U.S. commercial organization. The role reports into the Vice President of Global External Communications, based in Boston, and is closely connected to the Global Product Team within Corporate Communications.

The role is responsible for strategic leadership and tactical execution of U.S. communications programs, in partnership with cross-functional leaders and communication team members. The Director, US Communications provides key counsel to the U.S. Leadership Team and supports executive communications and thought leadership for the Senior Vice President, US Commercial Operations and the Chief Commercial and Global Operations Officer. In-depth knowledge of the Company’s global business is a fundamental requirement of the position, especially as it relates to product and portfolio scientific / technical specifications, data and pipeline, and the corporate brand and culture.

The role also includes oversight and execution of key internal communications initiatives, in partnership with the Global Internal Communications team, as well as strategy and operational counsel to the Global External Communications team.

Principal Responsibilities

  • Lead internal, external and executive communications for the U.S. commercial business.

  • Partner with colleagues in Global Product Communications, Internal Communications, Corporate Communications and Executive Communications, as well as agency and cross-functional partners, to ensure the U.S. voice is represented in the global communications team.

  • Coordinate with U.S. leadership on individual issues, needs and opportunities.

  • Create high-level deliverable materials (e.g. internal memos, newsletters, key messages, Q&A) and maintain with regular updates over time as needed.

  • Help raise the profile of Alexion’s U.S. leadership as well ensure they are armed and on-message to communicate about the Company and key issues, in coordination with colleagues across Global Corporate Communications.

  • Contribute to the corporate social media activity.

  • Instigate, respond to, oversee and/or directly manage internal communications programs.

  • Represent Corporate Communications on U.S. Leadership Team.

  • Serve on External Communications Leadership team and oversee key strategy, KPIs/reporting and key operational activities for Global External Communications team.

  • Travel as needed across the U.S. for Alexion-related business.

H/she may be asked to perform other function-related activities in addition to the above mentioned responsibilities as reasonably required by business needs.


  • 12+ years of work experience in a healthcare communications setting

  • Extensive experience with internal communications and supporting the communications and thought leadership of senior executives

  • Strong knowledge of different regulatory environments for pharmaceuticals and rare disease/orphaned drugs in particular

  • Proven ability to partner across functions and work in a matrixed organization

  • Very strong writing skills with attention to detail on scientific, complex or technical subjects

  • Experience in managing communications in sensitive, and crisis, situations

  • Strong experience in managing print, video and web engagement and production

  • Strong digital and social media skills

  • Strong organizational skills

  • Experience in managing budgets
