About the Position:

As the Director of Product Management for Ontologies, you will lead the development and ongoing operations of our system for organizing jobs, skills, education and training. Our ontologies serve as the backbone of our big data application which support clients to create a labor market that works for everyone. In this role, you will lead a team of ontologists and partner with our product team to ensure that our ontologies meet the needs of our customers in human capital management, education, and public policy. You will work closely with our data science and engineering teams to build and enhance the machine learning engines which read job postings, resumes, and learning objects (e.g. course descriptions and syllabi) and extract relevant labor market data.

This role requires a visionary leader who can translate trends in the future of work, such as emerging jobs and skills, and changes in the nature of education and training into data and software. The ideal candidate has both a deep background in software and data, and experience with labor market data though experience in human resources, economic or social science research.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Oversee the development of labor ontologies which describe jobs, skills and education which are relevant to today's dynamic labor market. Our ontology development includes:

  • Identifying emerging jobs and skills and defining them in our data and software

  • Creating attributes and metadata which make analyses of job market trends more insightful and actionable

  • Managing relationships between Burning Glass data and 3rd party data source such as government data sets, financial data sets, etc.

  • Articulate and evangelize the importance of Burning Glass' ontologies, and unique differentiators relative to government and alternate methodologies.

  • Define and execute a product roadmap ensures that our data can fully address the needs of customers in human capital management, education, and public policy now and in the future.

  • Ensure robust operational processes to manage the product development lifecycle for our ontologies and metadata.

  • Partner with data science team to enhance our classification engines which extract the occupations described in job postings, the career paths shown in resumes and the skill taught in training courses, etc.

  • Manage relationships with 3rd party data providers

  • Writing client facing documentation about our ontologies and data coding operations.

  • Draft product requirements and functional specifications.

  • Recruit, manage and develop ontologists and data analysts and provide general contributions to Burning Glass' product development process and algorithm and data pipeline development.

  • Provide leadership in the development of Burning Glass knowledge graph.

  • Partner with stakeholders to develop systems which reduce the cost to develop and maintain Burning Glass' ontology.

Requirements include:

The ideal candidate is highly professional, intelligent, mature, and organized. S/he has prior experience managing ontologies or working with products utilizing large unstructured data and natural language processing; is able to manage teams, work independently, multitask, and anticipate requests; and enjoys working in a busy, dynamic, and entrepreneurial environment. Other valuable traits include:

  • 7+ years of prior work experience including experience working with complex data sets such as ontologies, graph databases, natural language processing, machine learning etc.

  • Knowledge of the ontology development principles, frameworks, and tools including RDF, OWL, SPARQL, etc.

  • Experience leading and managing software products or projects with diverse stakeholders and cross functional teams.

  • Ability to tell stories with data and develop data-driven insights.

  • Proficiency in statistical analysis/data management tools including several of SQL, Python, Pool Party, BI Platforms or equivalent

  • Experience in education technology, HR technology and working with US government data are helpful, but not required

  • Strong communication skills including ability to explain complex data concepts to a range of stakeholders and outstanding technical writing skills.

  • Highly detail-oriented with strong project management skills.

  • Intense intellectual curiosity
