IHS Markit Consulting Principal in Boston, Massachusetts

IHS Markit Transportation Consulting provides multi-modal transportation consulting and advisory services to public and private sector customers, particularly in the areas of freight markets and commodity flows. The Transportation Consulting group also produces the annual IHS Markit TRANSEARCH commodity flow/modal freight research product which is used by public sector clients for planning purposes and by transport service providers and infrastructure owners in their market strategic planning.

The candidate should be able to demonstrate experience with and knowledge of one or more of the following areas: motor carriers, freight railroads, air cargo, maritime cargo carriers. Intellectual curiosity regarding the dynamics of the freight transportation sector in North America is a must.

This position will perform as a member of a consultant team and/or as a sole contributor to projects, conducting analysis for a wide range of projects. This will require an ability to work collaboratively and cooperatively with team members and across IHS Markit's business areas. Problem-solving abilities are highly valued. This includes conceptual thinking along with an ability to delve into details, manage databases, and synthesize information. Prior business development experience is valuable in this position.

General Job Duties:

  • Working knowledge of motor carrier, railroad, rail intermodal, drayage, air cargo, barge/Inland waterways, Third Party Logistics service providers, transport equipment and service leasing firms, institutions using freight transportation data and advice, and/or goods movements to/from port operations in North America. Experience and proficiency in several freight modes is preferred

  • Data science and data mining background with special emphasis on MS SQL, R, Python

  • 7+ years relevant experience

  • Preferred candidate will participate in data delivery for clients of custom data sets from the IHS Markit TRANSEARCH database

  • Assist in monitoring project work within schedule and budget through client contacts during and after project completion

  • Prepare and deliver presentations internally and externally

  • Develop internal working relationships while collaborating with IHS Markit's other business units. Coordinate other staff in Transportation Consulting team in support of projects in all or some of the areas identified above

  • Support business development activities of product and inside sales colleagues within IHS Markit, including identification of prospect and consulting opportunities

  • Support the Transportation Consulting Practice strategic growth by applying and identifying new capabilities and knowledge areas to meet revenue and sales objectives

  • Assist with enhancing the collaboration across IHS Markit Consulting and its business areas to improve its competitiveness and market position

  • Provide support and share knowledge with other team members to enhance capabilities and expertise. Act as a mentor for junior staff and provide leadership

  • The candidate must demonstrate the ability to perform or assist preparation of client proposals

  • Identify issues and challenges as they arise and present alternative solutions

  • Communicate verbally and in writing effectively with internal staff and with customers

  • Demonstrate initiative and entrepreneurship

Required Education:

Master's degree is preferred with transportation, economics, logistics, and supply chain emphasis

Preferred Skills:

  • Consulting Experience

  • Freight transportation industry experience

  • Understanding of the work in the disciplines of freight transportation planning and transportation engineering

  • Experience dealing with large data sets using MS SQL, Python, R, MS Access and Excel

  • GIS experience with ESRI ArcInfo, TransCAD is a plus
