The Vertex Companies, Inc. (VERTEX) is looking for a Civil Design Engineer to join our growing team. VERTEX is a fast-growing multidisciplinary firm with office throughout the United States, Mexico, and Canada. We are seeking to grow our engineering team within our expanding New England market. This is an excellent opportunity for a motivated individual who is looking for growth opportunities. With a focus on residential, multi-tenant, industrial, educational and commercial sites, the Civil Design Engineer will perform design tasks for a variety of projects including drainage design, grading, site layout, utilities, demolition and erosion control ensuring proper drainage across the site, contemplating low impact design and overall site function. Vertex’s diverse range of projects will allow the Civil Engineer to rapidly expand their knowledge base and grow their responsibilities. Performs and directs the preparation of design and construction plans, specifications, cost estimates, supporting documents and permit applications with a team of CADD Technicians, Designers and other Engineers, with an increasing level and frequency of supervision and scheduling of team members. Works closely with other discipline Engineers on multi-discipline projects.

Core Responsibilities

  • Performs and verifies design computations and plan preparation for conformance with codes, manuals, and design considerations

  • Researches code requirements and design procedures manuals

  • Drainage and/or roadway design and site grading experience preferred

  • Coordinates with other Engineers, CADD Technicians, and administrative assistants during preliminary and final document preparation

  • Seeks technical support and advice from peers and experienced professionals to increase knowledge

  • Prepares correspondence, technical specifications, studies and design reports

  • Attends and participates at client and agency meetings as appropriate

  • (the following are all actually responsibilities. Utilizes AutoCAD Civil3D and various software applications

  • Visits project sites to review conditions as appropriate

  • Applies standard practices and techniques in specific situations, adjusts and correlates data, recognizes discrepancies in results, and follows operations through a series of related detailed steps or processes

  • Adheres to communication protocols and exhibits strong communication skills with project team members, client representatives, review agencies, and others to facilitate the design and permitting process.

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or other related field is required. Registration as an Engineer-in-Training is preferred or will have EIT certification within a year.

Experience

  • 2-4 years of experience

Knowledge & Skills

  • Intermediate proficiency with AutoCAD Civil 3D, Word, Excel and Microsoft Project

  • Drainage and / or roadway design experience preferred

  • HydroCAD, HEC RAS and / or HEC HMS experience is preferred

  • Site grading experience preferred

Special

  • OSHA-10 or -30 certifications preferred

  • Ability to travel independently to visit sites throughout the region is required

Physical Requirement

  • Walk job sites during inspections, sometimes on uneven terrain

  • Carry construction tools and equipment (up to 30 pounds) onto job sites with regularity
