The Role

Suffolk’s Chief People Officer (CPO) is a strategic leadership role responsible for overseeing all aspects of human resources and people management within the organization. The CPO at Suffolk plays a crucial role in developing and executing the company's people strategy to attract, retain, and develop top talent while fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, and employee engagement. This role reports directly to the Chief Growth Officer and collaborates closely with the full executive leadership team to align people strategies with business objectives.

Suffolk’s people leader will be responsible for six key areas:

  • Talent Acquisition and Workforce Planning: Both Recruiting and Project Staffing

  • Learning and Development

  • HR Business Partner Program

  • Employee Experience, Culture, and Wellbeing

  • HR Information Systems

  • Compensation and Benefits

  • (And will partner with the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion team, which sits elsewhere in the Suffolk organization)

This role is responsible for managing a team of about 50 HR and talent professionals.

Specific activities will include:

  • Collaborate with the executive team to align people strategies with the overall business objectives and growth plans of the company.

  • Develop and drive Suffolk’s long-term people strategy, ensuring it supports Suffolk’s mission, vision, and core values.

  • Develop effective talent acquisition strategies to attract skilled professionals in the construction industry, as well as retention strategies to reduce turnover and foster a high-performing workforce.

  • Continue to strengthen our workplace culture of learning and performance.

  • Lead a high performing People and Culture team, empowering them to build high-performing teams and drive exceptional results.

  • Oversee the implementation of structured performance appraisal processes, including regular check-ins, and annual performance evaluations.

  • Develop strategies for recognizing and rewarding exceptional performance, contributing to a positive and motivating work environment.

  • Collaborate with the VP, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion to establish meaningful diversity, equity, and inclusion goals and key performance indicators, tracking progress and sharing insights with the executive team to drive continuous improvement.

  • Monitor employee satisfaction and implement strategies to address concerns and improve workplace wellbeing.

  • Oversee all HR operations, benefits administration, and HRIS management.

  • Ensure compliance with labor laws, regulations, and industry standards, and adapt policies and procedures accordingly.

  • Provide leadership during times of organizational change, guiding employees through transitions and maintaining a positive culture.

  • Guide HR reporting and analytics that will drive business decisions including monitoring and reporting of appropriate metrics and key performance indicators

  • Bachelor's degree.

  • Proven experience in a senior HR leadership role. Experience in the construction or engineering industry is a nice to have but not a must-have.

  • Demonstrated experience in talent acquisition, performance management, and employee development.

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to influence and collaborate at all levels of the organization.

  • Strategic thinking and the ability to translate business goals into effective people strategies.

  • Change management expertise and the ability to lead through organizational transformations.

The Chief People Officer will play a pivotal role in shaping Suffolk’s culture, fostering employee growth, and supporting the organization's strategic objectives. They will contribute to the continued success and growth of Suffolk by ensuring that the company attracts, develops, and retains exceptional talent while maintaining a positive and engaging work environment.
