Plymouth Rock Assurance Actuarial Manager in Boston, Massachusetts
The Plymouth Rock Group of Companies writes or manages more than $1.6 billion in P&C insurance across the Northeast and New Jersey. Our Actuarial group is seeking a self-motivated and creative Actuarial Manager to lead the actuarial team in our downtown Boston office.
The Actuarial Manager is a subject matter expert in the areas of reserving, rate making and claims analysis for Private Passenger Auto, Commercial Auto and Homeowners lines of business. He/she is responsible for researching new approaches to business issues and developing the framework to apply these concepts to our reserving and rate making processes. The position will be expected to quickly acquire knowledge of and evaluate the key product and claims business drivers and incorporate such in the assessment of reserves and profitability of the business.
Responsible for managing the reserve analysis, incorporating both traditional and non-traditional methods; will also be responsible for developing new non-traditional methods.
Works closely with the Product and Claims teams, understanding changes in the business and claims operation in order to improve the accuracy of reserve estimates.
Responsible for assessing profitability of the business, working with Product Managers to determine rate needs.
Works closely with the Product team to prepare and maintain loss forecasts.
Provides written and oral support as necessary to ensure approval of rates filed with the Departments of Insurance.
Maintains an external network within the insurance industry to track emerging trends and approaches to business issues.
Requirements & Skills:
Advanced querying skills, preferably SQL, required
Expert excel skills required
Strong project management skills
Regulatory expertise within Plymouth Rock’s state footprint
Specializes in conceptualizing complex issues, identifying appropriate data and information to lead analysis in solving these issues
Expert oral and written communication to both technical and non-technical audiences
Confidence in taking ownership of challenging business issues and seeing issues through to resolution
Superior critical-thinking and problem-solving skills
Education & Experience:
A minimum of 7 years of experience in reserving with an applied background in Property & Casualty ratemaking, reserving and profitability analysis
Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics, Statistics, Economics, Actuarial Science, or related field
Proven experience with loss reserve and claim metric analysis and demonstration of incorporating non-traditional techniques that enhance traditional analysis
A thorough understanding of the insurance industry is required
