Cabot Corporation Scientist-Energy Materials in Billerica, Massachusetts

The successful candidate will work on R&D projects in Cabot’s high-growth Energy Materials business with a focus on solid state Li-ion batteries, contributing to the creation of new concepts and providing solutions to complex technical problems. This position will also provide opportunities to collaborate with a highly talented team of scientists and engineers, while also working collaboratively with external partners and customers.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in the areas of solid-state electrochemistry, Li-ion batteries, materials chemistry, and/or interfacial surface science. Employs thorough scientific approach, including understanding of literature, mechanistic thinking, hypothesis setting, experimentation, analysis, and reporting. Provides guidance and training to more junior employees. May participate in select customer facing activities and interact with Sales/Marketing or product/process development groups, and/or external customers.

  • Conducts independent research to understand and deliver solutions to important technical and commercial problems in applications, Cabot products, or process technology. Partners with technology management and other functions (e.g. marketing, manufacturing, etc.) to establish objectives and implement.

  • Interprets the principles, theories, and concepts within the field of Li-ion and solid-state batteries may seek technical guidance on unusual or complex problems.

  • Contributes to specific product and process development needs. Shares learnings across organization.

  • Conducts work requiring independent judgment in the evaluation, selection, adaptation, and modification of standard techniques, processes, and criteria; refer to knowledge of precedents in the specialty area and principles and practice in related specialties.

  • Generates data, conducts advanced statistical analysis, and organizes and interprets data to establish and support new process, materials, and/or application learning. Conducts tests, draws conclusions, advances hypotheses, and makes recommendations.

  • Plans, schedules, conducts, or coordinates detailed phases of work for a part of a major project or total project of moderate scope.

  • Knowledge of Safety Awareness. Ensures safety documents are in place for experimental work.

  • Prepares reports and document results, provide conclusions and next steps.

  • May supervise employees assisting in specific assignments by providing day to day instruction and developing and assigning work plans.

  • Adheres to all intellectual property standards throughout area of responsibility. Stays current with relevant patent literature. Identifies opportunities to capture new IP and supports the preparation of patent applications.

  • Evaluates materials, designs, and conducts experiments to meet product requirements, R&D objectives, and program milestones.

  • Strictly follows and complies with all SH&E procedures, standards and regulations and constantly strives for Excellence in the fields of sustainability and Safety, Health and preservation of the Environment.

  • Builds cells and analyzes data to quantitatively measure and compare cell performance.

  • Apply diagnostics to investigate cell reactions conduct failure mode analysis to identify root causes and generate novel solutions.

  • Experience in lithium ion/metal chemistry and battery components, especially solid-state electrolytes.

  • Knowledge of electrochemical systems and battery electrode fabrication, as well as material science and process engineering, with understanding of electrical properties of materials and/or knowledge of processes used in material synthesis.

  • Excellent laboratory practices, record keeping, report writing and presentation skills.

  • Strong communication skills and ability to work as part of a highly integrated team.

  • Experience with battery testing; familiarity with Maccor or other equivalent testing systems.

  • Technical problem analysis: ability to identify causes of and potential solutions to technical problems. Experimental design, modeling, data management, and analysis proficiency. Skillful data interpretation, to create knowledge.

  • Knowledge in the critical aspects of project management.

  • Graduate or post-graduate experience at a U.S. Academic Institution, National Laboratory, or Industry.

  • Experience with solid-state electrolytes (ceramic, glass, polymer) material synthesis, electrolyte-active material interaction, and particle surface modification is highly recommended.

  • Familiarity with advanced analytical techniques to support material optimization studies.

  • Experience with Design of Experiments (DOE) methodology and/or statistical methods is extremely desirable.


  • Post-secondary Technical degree (Bachelor’s/University) in chemical engineering, chemistry, electrochemistry, materials science, or a related field; and generally 8+ years of related experience.


  • Master’s Degree in chemical engineering, chemistry, electrochemistry, materials science, or a related field and generally 4+ years of related experience.


  • P.H.D. in in chemical engineering, chemistry, electrochemistry, materials science, or a related field.
