Bruker Corporation Mechanical Engineer in Billerica, Massachusetts

We have an immediate opening for a Mechanical Engineer in our Triple Quadrupole R&D group in Billerica, MA headquarters. The ideal candidate will be a self-starter and have a proven track record of producing efficient and innovative mechanical designs for instrumentation. His/her duties will include conceptual, layout, and detail design of analytical instruments. Demonstrated ability to produce, document and manage complex designs in a team environment is essential efficiently and effectively. Experience will include using the latest techniques balancing function, manufacturability, cost, serviceability, and aesthetics.

  • Participates in forward looking design and feasibility studies for new products and new technologies

  • Responsible for primary design of mechanical components, assemblies, and packaging of new products

  • Must be a team player capable of working in interdisciplinary teams including physics, chemistry, math, electronics, and others. Take input from physicists, chemists, and other engineers and turn them into real world pragmatic designs

  • Must be a good communicator capable of working with colleagues remotely or in person

  • Must be willing to travel occasionally for training and to work directly with colleagues in Europe

  • Responsibilities include the whole development cycle from ordering to receiving, prototyping, and debugging designs. Working with outside vendors to provide innovative and cost-effective mechanical solutions

  • May have to coordinate with offshore manufacturing sites

  • Efforts are self-directed based on broad goals

Education and/or Experience:

  • BSME with 3+ years of experience

  • Proven experience producing, documenting, and managing complex designs is required

  • Proven experience and ability to work in teams both remote and in person is required

  • Experience designing analytical instrumentation is extremely desirable

  • Experience working with electrical engineers on systems comprising both electrical and mechanical components is highly desirable

  • Knowledge of and/or experience having parts fabricated utilizing conventional and alternate manufacturing methods is highly desirable

  • Experience with high voltage (thousands of volts), high vacuum (1E-7 mbar), ceramics fabrication, and/or electronics is desirable

  • Experience working in a global environment is a plus

Computer Skills:

  • Experience with a widely used CAD software package is required. Experience with Solid Works, Solid Edge specifically, is a plus

  • Experience working under PLM systems is desirable

Other Skills and Abilities:

  • Individual must be capable of independent judgment in design selection, research approaches, methodologies, and tools. But these attributes must be guided by input from other scientists and engineers

  • Ability to communicate with engineers and scientists of other disciplines such as EEs, scientists, both within the project and with collaborators outside the project group

Other Qualifications:

  • Experience with solid modeling, Finite Element Analysis, packaging, thermal management, high voltage management, gas controls, and pneumatic design desirable

  • Familiarity with modern metal and plastics manufacturing techniques including injection molding, soft molding, sheet metal design, brazing, welding, materials selection, and manufacturing methods is desirable

  • Familiarity with ceramics manufacturing is a plus
