About the Bureau of Forest Fire Control and Forestry: The Bureau of Forest Fire Control and Forestry offers programs to promote, protect and enhance healthy and diverse wooded and urban forests throughout our Commonwealth including grant opportunities for urban forestry and volunteer fire assistance, staff assistance to municipalities for fire control, consulting forestry and forest stewardship for private lands, oversight of forest health issues including insect and disease control and storm related response, regulatory guidance on timber harvests as well as forest management and timber sales on state lands. The Department of Conservation and Recreation seeks qualified applicants for the position of Seasonal Forestry Assistant- UCF Grants Program. This position begins on or about April 7, 2024 and ends November 30, 2024. SPECIFIC DUTIES: Assist the UCF Coordinator with the UCF grants program. Review of grant proposals for accuracy and completion. Work with municipalities and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) on all aspects of the grant program. Oversees planting plans to ensure that the “right tree, right place” principle is followed. Monitors tree planting operations to ensure that tree planting adheres to United States Forest Service and DCR guidelines. Works in partnership with grant recipients to ensure that tree stewardship is ongoing. Performs related duties such as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge of the principles and practices of urban and community forestry. Knowledge and principles of tree planting and new tree care. Knowledge and experience with reviewing grants. Ability to understand, explain and interpret UCF grant opportunities to municipalities and NGOs. Ability to follow written instructions. Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written expression. Ability to maintain accurate records. Ability to read and interpret documents. Our short-term positions are not part of the salary scale that is advertised within this job posting. Minimum Entrance Requirements: Applicants must have at least (A) one year of full-time, or equivalent part-time experience in forestry or natural resource management, or (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below. Substitutions: I. An Associate's or higher degree with a major in forestry or forestry management may be substituted for the required experience.* Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.
