Our North American Commercial Operations, as well as our Headquarters and Technology Center for Hemostasis and Acute Care Diagnostics, are based in Bedford, MA. Our Headquarters and Technology Center for Autoimmunity Diagnostics is based in San Diego, CA. Additionally, our Technology Center for Hemostasis and Blood Gas Reagents is in Orangeburg, NY, and our Technology Center for Whole Blood Hemostasis is in San Diego, CA.

Position Summary

Recognized, within and outside the company, as an expert in one or more technical areas. Identifies and evaluates new areas of technology, methods and concepts which benefit the company by leading to innovative products. Makes decisions and recommendations that have significant impact.

The Staff Scientist will also be responsible for the development of all hemostasis related aspects of the Werfen next generation fully automated Hemostasis workflow (including integrated assay on new hardware and software, application parameters and test definitions, cartridge reagents specifications) as part of a new high throughput diagnostic platform. The Staff Scientist will have dotted line management responsibilities for a team of scientists in the matrix role of Analytical Core Team Lead for the development of a new high throughput Hemostasis diagnostic platformThe Staff Scientist will be responsible to deliver all technical performance aspects of the hemostasis testing workflow as defined by the Analytical Product Requirement Document as well as to work collaboratively in highly cross-disciplinary and cross-functional setting interfacing to Engineering functions as well as Quality, Regulatory, Clinical and Medical.

Key Accountabilities

Essential Functions:

· Applies new technologies, scientific principles, theories and concepts to solve problems in original and creative ways.

· Plans, budgets and estimates R&D scientific and engineering efforts required to investigate, improve, modify or adapt new technology and concepts to future company products.

· Works with minimal direction toward predetermined medium range goals. Work is self-directed.

· Directs the work of lower level scientists and engineers.

· Makes technical decisions that affect goals critical to major objectives.

· Prepares technical papers for publication and/or presentation and maintains comprehensive knowledge of scientific literature and competitive products.

· Serves as organization consultant and spokesperson on specialized projects or programs.

· Performs other related duties as position requires.

· Responsible for cross-functional collaboration for technical solutions in new product development and released product support projects.

· Frequent inter-organizational and outside contacts. May represent the company to outside organizations on technical issues.

Minimum Knowledge & Experience Required:

· Education: Knowledge acquired through a Master’s or a Ph.D. Degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biology, Biomedical Engineering or related fields

· Experience:

o Master’s plus 10 years of relevant experience or

o Ph.D. degree plus 7 years of relevant experience

o Product or project specific experience may be a substitute for higher degree.

· Additional Skills/Knowledge:

o Strong oral and written communication skills.

o Duties require broad use and application of scientific principles, theories and concepts in field of expertise.

o Must demonstrate the ability to perform all duties and responsibilities similar to or higher than Senior Principal Scientist level.

· Primary Requirements:

o Excellent understanding of the underlying technical principles of diagnostic assays and automated workflows (ideally hemostasis assays or blood-based assays), associated instrumentation platforms and data analysis and interpretation algorithms

o Mandatory experience in diagnostic assay-based technologies (ideally hemostasis or blood-based assays) and product development (chemistry and hardware) with a documented record of success in the life sciences and/or molecular diagnostics market

o Strong management skills with a track record of increasing responsibilities and the management of medium to large groups in matrix format; international experience preferred

o Very good troubleshooting and problem solving skills

o Proven leadership and successful decision-making qualities

o Preferred intellectual property protection skills
