The MITRE Corporation’s Electronic Systems Innovation Center is seeking a Principal Embedded Security Engineer to lead the identification, development, and automation of scalable solutions for challenging embedded security problems. This position will work across MITRE projects, the United States Government, academia, and industrial partners in driving the development and adoption of automated embedded system protection tools to enable new secure design, manufacturing, and testing approaches for ASICs, FPGAs, firmware, and embedded software. Candidates should have strong technical background and research experience in embedded system design and security as well as effective communication and interpersonal skills.

Responsibilities include:

This position provides an exciting opportunity to shape the trajectory of the US Government’s technical approach to embedded security through engagement, capability development, and applied research and development projects. Specific responsibilities include:

  • Develop, lead, and coordinate high-impact technical work and research in hardware and systems security toward automated techniques to analyze and secure embedded systems.

  • Foster engagements with MITRE programs, US Government sponsors, industry partners, and academia to identify and capitalize on opportunities to apply, adopt, and extend automated protection approaches to address multiple problem areas within embedded security for government and commercial applications

  • Work with industry partners to integrate automated protection approaches into leading commercial tools to enable broader impacts

  • Plan and maintain supporting capabilities (lab equipment and related infrastructure) in alignment with current and future research and work program needs

  • Participate in talent acquisition and staff development activities to help strengthen a world-class team of experts in this space

Required Qualifications:

  • Ability to obtain DoD Secret Clearance

  • B.S. (or higher) in Electrical or Computer Engineering or Computer Science and 10+ years of related experience

  • Expertise and practical experience in hardware attacks and countermeasures which may include tampering, invasive and non-invasive attacks, and integrated circuit, hardware, and software reverse engineering & vulnerability discovery

  • Understanding of cryptography and information security concepts

  • Experience in embedded systems security architectures

  • Experience leading teams developing or evaluating secure embedded systems

  • Willingness/passion for mentoring and developing junior engineers

Preferred Qualifications:

  • M.S. or PhD in Electrical or Computer Engineering, Computer Science or related field

  • Familiarity with secure US government systems

  • Ability to work with customers to understand their use cases and formulate a path forward, requires excellent oral and written communication skills for technical and non-technical audiences

  • Ability to build consensus and partnerships across industry, academia, and customers to advance state of the art in embedded systems security

  • Strong understanding of internal workings of electronic design automation (EDA) tools used for ASIC and FPGA development

  • Experience with software development

  • Expertise in machine learning, automation, and numeric optimization

  • Strong understanding of compiler design

  • Experience with Anti-Tamper design and countermeasure development

  • Experience with identifying critical research lab investments for embedded security
