Oracle Principal Analytics Engineer – Video Analytics and Understanding in Bedford, Massachusetts

Design, develop, troubleshoot and debug software programs for databases, applications, tools, networks etc.

As a member of the software engineering division, you will take an active role in the definition and evolution of standard practices and procedures. You will be responsible for defining and developing software for tasks associated with the developing, designing and debugging of software applications or operating systems.

Work is non-routine and very complex, involving the application of advanced technical/business skills in area of specialization. Leading contributor individually and as a team member, providing direction and mentoring to others. BS or MS degree or equivalent experience relevant to functional area. 7 years of software engineering or related experience.

*OCI Media Services *is an exciting new team working on a suite of OCI-native services in the digital media space. We are building services from the ground up that run the gamut from content transcode and streaming to information extraction and analytics.

As a Principal Software Engineer, you will lead the effort in building distributed, scalable, fault tolerant software systems in support of our business needs and end customer. You will own the entire software lifecycle – development, testing, CI/CD and production operations. You must balance between product feature development and production operational concerns like instrumentation, writing run books and ops automation, leveraging internal tooling at OCI.

From a technology perspective, this is a greenfield development environment with a huge amount of autonomy, leaving us free to build and innovate without being encumbered by legacy products and services.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 5 years of experience shipping scalable distributed systems

  • BS in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent experience

  • Design, implementation, and operation of customer facing APIs and services.

  • Experience delivering microservices, third party service integration, and cloud deployments that are designed for scalability and site reliability.

  • Proficient in Java, Python, or C

  • Able to effectively communicate ideas verbally and in writing.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Performance optimization executing on large data sets

  • Internal infrastructure setup and operation for distributed computing and data processing (k8s, kubeflow, MPI, Spark, …).

  • Experience with time series data and drill down analysis.

  • Experience operating deep learning models.

  • Not afraid to challenge assumptions as situations change.


  • Develop and operate services for data capture related to video consumption.

  • Publish event data to configurable event subscribers (Kafka, OCI Notifications, etc.).

  • Aggregate event data to time series databases.

  • Build dashboards in Grafana to support drill down analysis of video consumption metrics.

  • Operate and scale deep learning services for ML training and evaluation.

  • Implement services to support data labeling for ML training sets.

  • Integrate with other service providers for analyzing audio and video.

  • Work in a collaborative, cross-functional team environment.

Detailed Description and Job Requirements

The service engineers will support the capture and publication of/Quality of Experience/and/Consumption/metrics to customers of Oracle’s Media Services. In addition, they will provide software engineering and operational expertise to the Machine Learning sub-team to support Video Understanding (image analysis, automatic speech recognition, NLU, …). Some of these ML services will be provided by other teams at Oracle that you will need to integrate with. The ML services will be exposed for use in the Content Encoding pipeline provided by other parts of the Media Service offering. You will coordinate with OCI’s Data Service team so they can expose the ML models for general use by OCI customers.
