In addition to executing on a rich set of programs sponsored through the six Federal Research and Development Centers (FFRDCs) that MITRE operates on behalf of its sponsors, MITRE Labs works with broader federal, state, and local government to develop robust partnerships with industry and academia to drive impact in the public interest.

In support of this mission, MITRE Labs operates several Innovation Centers which focus on various technologies. The Emerging Technologies Innovation Center (ETIC) focuses on emerging technology that have the opportunity to provide transformational solutions to MITRE sponsors in the mid- to long-term. The Energy, Environmental, Material, and Chemical Sciences (E2MC) Department within ETIC provides innovative solutions to address new opportunities and challenges in energy, environmental, material, and chemical sciences. We have a strong foundation of technical expertise across the broad spectrum of these technologies that our sponsors can draw upon to develop new capabilities as well as assess their vulnerabilities and respond to emerging risks. As we expand our program in key areas for our sponsors, we are looking for a Chief Environmental Engineer (CEE) to support this expansion.

The Chief Environmental Engineer will interact with a technically diverse and collegial team of engineers and scientists. The CEE is expected to make significant technical contributions of broad impact and provide thought leadership in one or more technical areas central to the E2MC Department. The CEE will help develop and execute strategies that push the technical boundaries for the work program including identifying and maturing other areas of emerging technologies. The CEE will also be expected to help develop and mentor our next generation of technical thought leaders.

Job Description:

The CEE will identify and execute scientific and technical initiatives to address national and global environmental engineering opportunities and challenges. This includes the execution of internal R&D funding, direct work programs with our FFRDCs, and whole-of-nation engagements across industry, academia, and government.

Serve as a resource, subject matter expert, and advisor to MITRE’s mission critical programs, MITRE’s National Security program, MITRE’s Public Sector program, and MITRE’s Center for Strategic Competition.

Represent MITRE externally through professional engagement in advisory boards, study commissions, professional societies, academic publications, and other external venues.

Identify opportunities for MITRE thought leaders across all career stages to engage internally and externally on environmental engineering challenges.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Typically requires a minimum of 10 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 8 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD with 5 years’ experience; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience.

  • Combination of education and work experience in Environmental Sciences and Engineering, Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related field.

  • The ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance;

  • Demonstrated track record of success in developing and executing against environmental engineering technology programs and initiatives in science and technology;

  • Record of high impact publications and participation in key technology community activities;

  • Experience driving impact across high-performing teams of researchers;

  • Technical expertise across a broad spectrum of environmental engineering technologies and the demonstrated ability to use this expertise to lead highly technical teams; and,

  • Background leading high-risk, high-reward technology development and applying this technology to solve critical challenges.

  • This position requires a minimum of 50% hybrid on-site.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Requires minimum of: 12 years experience with a Bachelor’s degree; 10 years experience with a Master’s degree; 7 years experience with a Ph.D.; or an equivalent combination of education and work experience in Environmental Sciences and Engineering, Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related field.

  • Extensive experience addressing and engaging with academic, industrial, government, and international partners in hydrology efforts;

  • Demonstrated track record leading national or international technology initiatives;

  • Experience in leading environmental engineering technology initiatives with Federal partners, such as the Department of Defense.
