Town of Arlington Mechanic-Motor Repair in Arlington, Massachusetts

Skilled maintenance and repair work servicing, maintaining and repairing police and fire automobiles, apparatus and other equipment of the Department of Community Safety; all other related work, as required. Supervision Works under the general supervision of the Master Mechanic. Functions are generally well defined and limited in scope, but may involve choice of alternative approaches to well precedented problems. Performs responsible duties following departmental rules, regulations and policies, requiring the ability to plan and perform operations to complete assigned tasks according to a prescribed time schedule; unusual situations are referred to the Master Mechanic. Work Environment Most work is performed in generally loud repair shop conditions, with frequent exposure to exhaust fumes, oil, dust and other airborne particles, and toxic or caustic chemicals; work also involves risk of injury, burns and electrical shock and other hazards associated with working near moving mechanical parts, and working in confined spaces. The work load is subject to seasonal fluctuations concerning the type of repair work. The employee is required to respond to weather-related emergencies and 2nd and 3rd alarm fires. The employee operates standard office equipment and a wide variety of equipment, including power, pneumatic and hand tools, various classes of motor vehicles, building and portable generators, radios, and various special and heavy and maintenance equipment. The employee has contact with police and fire personnel and vendors. Errors could result in costly equipment damage, delay or loss of service, serious personal injury or injury to others, and monetary loss. Essential Duties and Responsibilities The essential functions or duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. Maintains, repairs and performs preventive maintenance for all community safety automobiles, trucks, vans, sport utility vehicles, and hand tools. Repairs ambulances and related equipment; maintains supply of medical oxygen for the fire services; repairs and maintains equipment on life rescue support vehicles; maintains jaws of life. Welds, fabricates and makes repairs to fire engines and ladder trucks; mounts special equipment on fire apparatus. Maintains and repairs mobile generators; installs and maintains special equipment on police vehicles; services and maintains inspection division vehicles. Performs similar or related work as required, or as situation dictates. Recommended Minimum Qualifications Education and Experience High school diploma, supplemented by training in automobile and fire apparatus repair and maintenance; two years of experience in vehicle and heavy equipment repair and maintenance; . Additional Requirements Valid Massachusetts motor vehicle operators license Knowledge, Ability and Skill Extensive knowledge of the principles, procedures, methods, and techniques involved in the repair and maintenance of vehicles and heavy equipment. Thorough knowledge of safe repair practices. Thorough knowledge of the tools, techniques, equipment, and procedures used in fire apparatus and equipment inspection, testing, repair and maintenance. Knowledge of repair methods for heavy, diesel, and electrical equipment. Knowledge of hydraulic systems. Knowledge of welding and electrical repairs. Ability to diagnose problems in and repair motor vehicles and equipment and operate light, heavy, and special equipment. Ability to maintain standard records of equipment use and maintenance. Demonstrated ability to organize work and records, use personal computers and interact in an effective manner with fellow employees
