The Community Manager for the Initiative for Digital Public Infrastructure (iDPI) is responsible for communicating the potential and value of iDPI tools such asSmallTown/Amherst Talks (https://www.amherstma.gov/CivicAlerts.aspx?AID=3018&ARC=5916) andGobo (https://ethanzuckerman.com/2017/11/16/who-filters-your-news-why-we-built-gobo-social/) to conduct research as well as communicate with, educate, and support external partners on applications of the tools. The Community Manager will engage with collaborators and partners on specific projects and use those experiences to help inform further development of iDPI tools. The Community Manager must have the ability to travel regularly to the Pioneer Valley and surrounding areas of central Massachusetts in order to work with community partners.
Help collaborators and community partners, such as researchers and civic organizations, utilize iDPI tools to support healthy digital spaces, conduct novel research on digital infrastructure and the civic and social role of internet platforms, and advocate for approaches to digital infrastructures that treat technologies as public spaces and public goods.
Identify values-led organizations in the Pioneer Valley and surrounding areas that would benefit from the iDPI tool suite. Manage all communications and outreach to these organizations and facilitate partnerships between them and iDPI. Act as the primary contact for these organizations once partnerships have been established.
Represent the needs of end users, participate in design discussions and data collection, and help prioritize partner requests for improvements to iDPI tools.
Clearly and concisely communicate research discoveries, unique features, and new tools to partners. Report partner responses and unaddressed needs back to the iDPI team for further review.
Develop, produce, and distribute reports and multimedia training materials for partners and sponsor organizations.
Report to iDPI team on important trends in areas critical to partners.
Help with iDPI outreach efforts by running training sessions, workshops, and supporting events.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)
Bachelor’s degree and 1 – 2 years of relevant experience.
Experience with social media and online community management (e.g., moderating a subreddit).
Experience with survey research and related tools (i.e., Qualtrics) and customer relationship platforms (CRM) such as Salesforce.
Ability to collect, organize, and interpret data in order to assess results.
Ability to explain complex technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
Excellent group facilitation skills.
Excellent written, verbal and organizational skills.
Ability to problem solve; identify problems and underlying causes, generate solutions and resolve discrepancies.
Ability to work both independently and to be part of an effective team with a highly cooperative and collaborative work style.
Ability to complete assignments in a timely manner, establish priorities and meet deadlines.
Ability to exercise sound judgment and maintain confidentiality.
Preferred Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)
Experience in the impact of the internet on society, particularly in the topics of communities, civic engagement, digital infrastructures, civic technology, alternatives to big tech, and/or healthy design.
Experience working directly with community organizations.
Physical Demands/Working Conditions
Must have the ability to travel within the Pioneer Valley and surrounding areas to work with community partners as well as travel to UMass Amherst for occasional meetings.
This is a 2-year, grant-funded position with the possibility of reappointment contingent upon satisfactory performance and the availability of funding. This position provides an opportunity for someone who is passionate about online communities to help make iDPI more useful for researchers and communities trying to build healthier digital spaces. This is not a traditional desk job—it is an opportunity to work on the ground and in the weeds with researchers and communities building the future of the internet.
This position has the opportunity for a remote work schedule, which is defined by the University as an arrangement where the employee’s work location is to work from a site other than the UMass Amherst campus. As this position is non-unit, it is subject to the terms and conditions of the University of Massachusetts Board of Trustees Non-Unit (Professional/or Classified) Employee Personnel Policy.
40 hours per week.
This is a non-unit professional position. Salary will be commensurate with experience.
