About UMass Amherst

UMass Amherst, the Commonwealth's flagship campus, is a nationally ranked public research university offering a full range of undergraduate, graduate and professional degrees. The University sits on nearly 1,450-acres in the scenic Pioneer Valley of Western Massachusetts, and offers a rich cultural environment in a bucolic setting close to major urban centers. In addition, the University is part of the Five Colleges (including Amherst College, Hampshire College, Mount Holyoke College, and Smith College), which adds to the intellectual energy of the region.

Job Description

The field technician will work with other field technicians, graduate students, and the cal/val team to conduct hydrologic measurements on rivers and lakes within and outside the U.S., including measurements of discharge, velocity, and bathymetry using an acoustic doppler current profiler; water surface elevation and inundation extent measurements using survey-grade GNSS instrumentation; and water level measurements using pressure transducers. They will also work on post-processing these data, processing airborne and satellite data to extract inundation extents for rivers and lakes, and comparing the resulting field and remotely sensed observations to SWOT satellite data. Data collection will involve working from motorized and non-motorized boats and along river and lake shorelines. This position involves both domestic and international travel to field sites, some in remote environments.

The Field Technician will work closely with the overall project lead (Dr. Colin J Gleason of UMass), the lead field technician (Dr. Taylor Rowley of UMass), and will report directly to Dr. Rowley at least weekly.
