Job Summary

The Maintenance Worker position works under the general supervision of a Technical Specialist II. This position maintains, repairs, installs all types of equipment, particularly food service equipment, acts as troubleshooter, and performs preventative maintenance.

Essential Functions

  • Performs according to instructions the installation, repair, maintenance, and inspection of equipment to ensure proper operation of equipment necessary to provide services.

  • Maintains, inspects, and assists in the installation and repair of refrigeration and heating units in compliance with existing standards and codes for health and safety reasons.

  • Repairs and replaces valves, timers, switches, motors, bearings, control relays, pumps, thermostats, fans, micro and safety switches, clutches, heating elements, and water/oil seals all in compliance with standards and codes to keep "non-operational" equipment time to a minimum.

  • Perform preventative maintenance by lubricating and greasing motors, pumps, and bearings, and adjusts and replaces belts on equipment and fans to service equipment and prevent malfunctions.

  • Maintains conveyor systems by tightening and lubricating chains, adjusting, and replacing belts and adjusting timers and limit switches to keep this equipment operating properly.

  • Calibrates all kinds of kitchen equipment including gas and electric ovens, fryers, and grills to manufactures specifications to facilitate proper food preparation.

  • Dismantles equipment and checks for worn or damaged parts; sharpens blades and makes required repairs for safety and efficiency.

  • Repairs specialty equipment which may require the welding of stainless steel and aluminum to keep equipment operational and avoiding costly repairs.

  • Unclogs drains and repairs faucets, sinks and toilets using standard plumbing techniques and codes for sanitary reasons and water conservation.

  • Assists journeyman with installation and relocation of major equipment and major construction and renovation projects according to specifications to minimize cost and become familiar with the equipment.

  • Assist in the erection of tents, barbecue pits, stages, and special equipment to meet the needs of special functions.

  • Assists in repairing of furniture and construction of cabinets and counters according to specifications to meet the needs of the department.

  • Determines supplies needed and may be required to pick up and deliver supplies following department procedures to facilitate the procurement of required supplies.

  • Instruct other employees in the proper use of equipment and appliances according to manufacturer’s instructions to permit safe and efficient operation.

  • Operates equipment used in repair and maintenance of equipment including drill press, grinders, saws and other hand and power tools according to department operating standards to maintain the equipment and furnishings of the department.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

  • At least two (2) years' of full-time or equivalent part time experience in food service equipment maintenance, carpentry, woodworking, or cabinet making work or a diploma or certificate with an appropriate major from a recognized trade, technical, or vocational school at high school level or higher.

  • Considerable knowledge of and working experience on all types of food service and institutional equipment.

  • Thorough knowledge of methods practices and techniques involved in installation repair and maintenance of equipment and appliances.

  • Working knowledge of various building maintenance trades including the care and operation of tools and equipment used in such trades.

  • Working knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions required in the operation of food service and other institutional equipment.

  • Ability to follow complex written and oral instructions.

  • Working knowledge of furniture repair and cabinet making.

  • Ability to keep records and requisition materials and equipment.

  • Ability to use, operate and maintain drill press, grinder, power saws, welding equipment and other hand and power tools used in maintenance work.

  • Ability to deal effectively with others.

  • Stamina to work in inclement weather and under adverse conditions when required.

Physical Demands/Working Conditions

Requires the ability to balance, carry, push, pull, stand, bend, reach, twist, lift and perform repetitive movements.

This position is designated as essential personnel.

Work Schedule

11AM-7PM; Sun-Thurs.

Salary Information

AFSCME Non-Exempt Grade 11.
