Job Summary

Incumbent oversees Student Affairs and Campus Life Communications, and assists in providing oversight for the day-to-day functions of the Office of Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and Campus Life. The Director of SACL Communications reports to the Chief of Staff for Student Affairs and Campus Life.

Essential Functions

  • Set strategy for and supervise marketing and communications within the functions of Student Life including SACL branding, communications consistency, and multiple media platforms. Develops, coordinates and oversees internal communications systems; identifies and monitors sensitive issues; provides resource materials; manages collaborative channels; coordinates and supervises contracted projects.

  • Supervises communication staff. Establishes and implements standards for communication throughout the division.

  • Acts as liaison to University Information Technology, University Relations, Office of Equity and Inclusion, Environmental Health & Safety, and other internal and external partners.

  • Prepares executive communications, including speeches, remarks, briefing and papers on current and potential issues in higher education. Works with sensitive and confidential information.

  • Maintains and uses knowledge of developments in the fields of marketing, external and internal communications, public relations, and higher education. Advises on practices for communications and public relations. Supports the University’s sensitive and nimble response to issues impacting campus climate.

  • Seeks input from key stakeholders and constituencies regarding Student Life programs and services. Establish KPIs for communications, conduct assessments.

  • Provides leadership in preparing and executing crisis communications, including internal and external messaging, ensuring compelling and consistent messaging is applied across an appropriate mix of print publications, web and other electronic communication platforms. Measures the impact of initiatives and refines as needed.

  • Builds communication strategies responsive to campus and student needs; supports organizational direction.

  • Manage SACL Communications budget.  

  • Develops and manages special communications projects and strategic initiatives as assigned on behalf of the Chief of Staff

    Other Functions

  • Performs related duties as assigned or required.

  • Understands responsibilities with respect to Title IX, Clery and other compliance requirements.

  • Works collaboratively with other campus stakeholders. Understands responsibilities with respect to conflicts of interest and behaves in ways consistent both with law and with University policy.

  • Contributes toward creating a positive and respectful workplace.

  • Uses access to sensitive and/or not yet public university related information only in the performance of the responsibilities of position and exercises care to prevent unnecessary disclosure to others.

    Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

  • Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of five (5) years’ experience in higher education, marketing, communications or public relations with demonstrated success in digital media management.  Master’s degree preferred.

  • Skills, knowledge and experience in the design and execution of marketing, digital media, internal communications, and public relations activities.

  • Strong creative, strategic, analytical, and organizational skills. Experience developing and managing budgets.

  • Experience in the hiring, training, development, supervision and evaluation of staff.

  • Experience overseeing the design and production of print materials and publications.

  • Commitment to working with shared leadership and in cross-functional teams.

  • Strong oral and written communications skills.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects at a time. 

    Physical Demands/Working Conditions

Typical office environment/activity.

Work Schedule

  • Typical work schedule: Monday-Friday 8:30am-5:00pm.

  • Occasional weekend and evening work required.
