State of Massachusetts Highway Operations Internship -Summer 2021 in 10 Park Plaza, Massachusetts

This internship is for the Summer of 2021 and it runs from June through August of 2021. *Position Summary* As an Operations Intern, you will gain experience working on critical operations programs and projects that keep the motoring public moving and our roads safe every day. Assignments include working on exciting and significant projects, sometimes conducting field investigations, and always delivering quality work that has a lasting influence on transportation operations through the Commonwealth. It is desired that interested candidates possess the following: * An interest in transportation topics. * Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite and strong understanding of technology in general. * A strong aptitude and desire to learn and work independently with limited supervision on projects and tasks. * The ability to clearly communicate both verbally and in writing. Programs accepting Operations Interns for Summer 2021: MassDOT Highway Division Sign Shop * Location: 4 Presidential Way, Woburn, MA Schedule: Monday – Friday, 6:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. * Assisting in making signs using Gerber printing technologies. * Assist in operational activities: data collection, organization of records, tracking inventory, stocking. *Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) * Location: 10 Park Plaza, Boston, MA Schedule: Monday – Friday, TBD * Develop findings and reports related to specific ITS activities and issues. * Utilize systems engineering, GIS, and field investigations to enhance recommendations for traffic congestion control and information. * Conduct research on transportation systems management and operations improvements. * Document workflow for process improvements. *Highway Operations Center: Traffic Incident Management and Highway Assistance Program * Location: 50 Haul Road, Boston, MA Schedule: Monday – Friday, TBD * Review Highway Assistance Program data collection and analytics to recommend process changes and improve reporting capabilities. * Conduct Traffic Incident Management research, recommend program adjustments, identify new emergency management guidance. * Develop findings, reports, and presentations on assigned projects. *Asset Management * Location: 10 Park Plaza, Boston, MA Schedule: Monday – Friday, TBD * Gather information and data on critical assets. * Analyze and audit data for accuracy. * Assist with updating procedures, guidance, and training documents. * Analyze reports and supporting documents and develop findings for operational improvements. *District One Location: 270 Main Street, Lenox MA Schedule: Monday – Friday, TBD * The intern would review the specifications for sidewalks as well as ADA requirements on an assigned section of roadway and would work up a sidewalk replacement job. When this work is completed, the intern will be sent out to an active sidewalk job to observe the actual work being done in the field. * Upon this work being completed the same task would be assigned but for a Pavement resurfacing project, and when completed, the intern will observe pavement being placed in the field. * The intern would have the opportunity to rotate through other ongoing job sites to observe bridge work, roadwork with excavation, facility work, etc. * The intern will work on survey skills, CAD, and traffic control skills. District Three * Location: 499 Plantation Street, Worcester MA Schedule: Monday – Friday, TBD * The intern would be assisting maintaining the maintenance service requests and updating the Highway Asset Management System which is Vue Works, as well as assisting with permitting and the GIS program. *District Five Location: 1000 County Street, Taunton MA Schedule: Monday – Friday, TBD * One intern would support the Garage/Mechanics to assist in inventory clean up, including field inspection of equipment and updating of inventory. This work is especially critical as we migrate from Maximo to VueWorks for parts/supplies management. * One intern would support the Traffic section by utilizing ArcGIS to record District-wide speed regulations on a map. District Six * Location: 185 Kneeland Street, Boston MA Schedule: Monday – Friday, TBD * Duties can include providing support getting the Vue Works interface up and running, assist in the review of ongoing Chapter 90 work approved for the District cities and towns, and assist in implementing the Shared Streets Program.
