MassDOT is responsible for developing, implementing, and coordinating transportation policies and projects for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and to efficiently plan, design, construct, and maintain a safe statewide transportation system which effectively meets the transportation needs of the Commonwealth. MassDOT’s divisions include: Highway, Aeronautics, Registry of Motor Vehicles, Rail & Transit, and Planning & Enterprise Services. There are approximately 3,600 employees across the organization. _Position Summary:_ The Co‐op will support the Environmental Services Section by reviewing MassDOT projects statewide to ensure compliance with state and federal environmental regulations. Duties may include reviewing project construction plans, analyzing project areas using ArcGIS, evaluating projects against environmental regulations, reviewing and developing permit applications, and performing occasional field work. _Duties and Responsibilities:_ The Co‐op will work closely with MassDOT staff to complete all tasks and will gain a broad range of knowledge in environmental regulations, policies and practices, including the Clean Water Act, the National Environmental Policy Act, the Massachusetts Environmental Policy Act, the Endangered Species Act, the Wetlands Protection Act, Resilience, Sustainability, Carbon Reduction, River Science / Fluvial Geomorphology, and various regulations and policies associated with hazardous materials, historic and archeological resources, and conservation land/open space. The Co‐op will work closely with the Wetlands and Water Resources Unit to review projects and ensure federal and state wetland permits are received before project advertisement. Duties may include reviewing plans and permit applications, assisting with wetland delineations, geographic information systems (GIS) project screening, and data management in GIS, Excel, and/or other systems . Occasional field work may be required for site visits, wetland delineations, and stream assessments. The Co‐op will work closely with the Wildlife and Endangered Species Unit to review projects and ensure federal and state endangered species clearances are received before project advertisement. Duties may include reviewing plans and endangered species consultations, assisting with consultation preparation and submittal, coordinating rare species permitting, GIS project screening, and data management in GIS, Excel, and/or other systems. Occasional field work may be required for site visits, rare species monitoring, and stream assessments. The Co‐op will also support the Stormwater Unit in implementing the statewide Stormwater Program. This will include assisting with collecting drainage infrastructure asset data in accordance with the MassDOT Asset Management Program; reviewing stormwater retrofit design plans; developing an inspection and maintenance protocol for stormwater treatment facilities; developing permit applications and reports for Stormwater Retrofit Projects in accordance with state and federal regulations, and daily administrative tasks associated with the Stormwater Program. In addition to meeting the minimum entrance requirements for this position, it is desirable that the selected applicant should possess the following: • Coursework or familiarity in hydrology and hydraulics, environmental policy, wetland science, hazardous materials, or conservation biology • An interest in environmental and transportation topics • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and ArcGIS • Excellent organizational abilities • Ability to operate effectively and professionally under pressure • Self‐motivated with strong aptitude and desire to learn and perform duties with limited supervision • Demonstrated ability to take direction and communicate clearly both verbally and in writing • Demonstrated positive "can do" attitude This requisition will remain open until filled; however, first consideration will be given to those applicants that apply within the first 14 days.
