A123 Systems, Inc. Test Engineering Supervisor in Waltham, Massachusetts


Position Overview

The Test Engineering Supervisor will be responsible to lead six to eight employees in a R&D lithium ion cell development laboratory in Waltham, MA. The supervisor will oversee the daily execution of Lithium ion cell testing on over 100 new experimental cells per week.


Primary responsibilities

  • Supervises employees including but not limited to: Creating Positive Work Environment, Time Card Approval, Vacation Planning, Sick Time, Performance Management, Annual Reviews, Disciplinary Action, Continuous Improvement, and Enforcing Company Policies

  • Coordinates the lab operational activities to ensure the safety of associates, high cell test quality standards and research schedules are met

  • Develops weekly laboratory cell testing plan and tracks execution to plan

  • Able to manage KPI metrics and characteristics to identified operational targets

  • Influence positive change and continuous improvements using Lean, TPS, and trained problem solving methodologies (i.e., Six Sigma, 8D, etc.)

  • Leads the development of team members

  • Contribute 20—40% of time as a technical contributor. Flows to the work to fill gaps as needed. Hands on execution of testing required.


Specific Skills/Abilities

The position requires:

  • A track record of creating an effective, highly recognized and proactive team well aligned with business objectives and needs and integrated with site operations

  • Knowledge of electrical test principles and equipment

  • Ability to effectively communicate to direct reports as well as upper management

  • Desire and interest in the cell testing research and data

  • Strong mechanical and electrical aptitude

  • Quality and detail oriented

  • Quick learner and adaptable to rapid change

  • Monday – Friday 7am to 4pm Work Schedule preferred. Some Flexibility allowed

  • Less than 10% travel as required


  • Minimum of 2 years of experience supervising direct reports , preferably in a laboratory test environment

  • Bachelors of Science degree and 5 yrs technical experience or Associates Degree and 10yrs technical experience
