IMED (Innovative Medicines and Early Development) focuses on scientific advances in small molecules, oligonucleotides and other emerging technologies and drug discovery platforms across our focus areas.
Pharmaceutical Sciences is a department within our Innovative Medicines and Early Development (IMED) Biotech unit. The vision for Pharmaceutical Sciences is to deliver the therapies of the future through scientific leadership in drug delivery, design of synthetic routes and manufacturing of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (API). Our portfolio of projects span traditional small molecules to RNA based therapeutics across AstraZeneca’s therapy areas. The Advanced Drug Delivery (ADD) department resides within Pharmaceutical Sciences and provides innovative drug products to AstraZeneca’s early opment pipeline.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
As an Associate Principal Scientist you will drive the scouting and testing of new advanced drug delivery technologies across modalities including nucleotide based therapeutics, small molecules, and peptides with the aim to drive drug targeting, intracellular and local delivery for the IMED portfolio. In this role you will spend time liaising and partnering with drug delivery companies and universities in the US to discover and drive proof-of-concept testing of new drug delivery technologies to evaluate utility for AZ pipeline projects.
Your networking skills and broad external network in the US across academia, biotechs, and subject matter experts will ensure that you get in contact with cutting edge drug delivery opportunities, and your in-depth drug delivery scientific and technical skills will ensure successful testing and partnering across Pharmaceutical Sciences, the IMED as a whole, and beyond.
To be successful in this role you will need to be a self-starter, who can create productive scientific partnerships, but also have the ability to work collaboratively and act decisively. You will need a blend of sciences, technical, business and relationship building acumen. This role will be based at our Waltham research site, and collaborate closely with ADD team-members located in Cambridge, UK and Gothenburg, Sweden.
As an Associate Principal Scientist you will contribute to developing a science & technology strategy for ADD built on scientific collaborations that enhance AZ’s capabilities and reputation. You will explore external partnering opportunities across the drug discovery and early development activities and secure a robust external network which delivers portfolio and capability needs. You will leverage cutting edge drug delivery expertise to explore new product opportunities, working in collaboration with other IMED departments to deliver on a joined up approach, and enable smart loading of the development activities. You will seek out and share insights into new technology/ novel product platforms and regulations, and support their adoption within AstraZeneca. You will continue to develop expertise in drug delivery, Pharmaceutical Sciences and Chemistry Manufacturing and Control (CMC) disciplines and pharmaceutical development. You will remain aware of new, relevant internal and external developments that affect the ADD area of the drug life cycle, and shares these with other members of team or function. You will collaborate with the rest of ADD and Pharmaceutical Sciences to secure intellectual property opportunities and maintain Astra Zeneca’s freedom to operate. You will ensures own work, and the work of others, is performed in accordance with appropriate Safety, Health & Environment (SHE), quality and compliance standards.
Ph.D. degree in pharmaceutical sciences, chemistry, drug delivery or equivalent relevant scientific discipline.
At least 5+ years of relevant experience is preferred.
A leader of one or more drug delivery scientific skill discipline(s) including external visibility through publications, presentations and networking activities. Capable of and desire for continuing to develop self in this arena.
Proven record in effective communication, networking, and build strong collaborative relationships with stakeholders across disciplines and cultures, internally and externally.
Strong project management skills, with experience of managing external collaborations.
Proven drug delivery technical skills and hands-on formulation or drug delivery development experience
Understanding of the Astra Zeneca’s disease areas to enable influencing drug delivery opportunities.
Broad understanding of discovery-to-launch drug development process, including how Pharmaceutical Sciences and CMC contribute to R&D and the broader business.
Innovative, with a passion for driving scientific excellence and a continuous improvement mind-set.
Thorough understanding of principles, applications and management of Safety Health and Environment (SHE).
Understanding of patent and IP strategies.
