Oxford Immunotec, Inc. Laboratory Manager, Blood Donor Screening in Norwood, Massachusetts
The Laboratory Manager is accountable for planning, directing and coordinating the laboratory team responsible for all testing in the Blood Donor Screening Laboratory at Oxford Immunotec’s Imugen facility in Norwood, MA. This position provides leadership and assumes responsibility and accountability for the provision of patient care and organizes, directs and controls all clinical and administrative activities. A continuous improvement mentality will be critical to maximize the quality of our service and its utility to our customers, to improve efficiency and reduce costs. This position is subject to organization policies and goals, and must establish plans and recommend policies and priorities, provided activities are consistent with company objectives.
Leverages knowledge and experience in molecular technologies to perform as a subject matter expert on DNA Extractions, real-time PCR, or Immunofluorescence Assays (IFA).
Actively participates in initiatives related to process improvement, LIS and LIMS implementations, and process validations.
Leads the work group to adhere to Quality Management System and ensures all policies and standard operating procedures are strictly followed
Ensures compliance with regulatory standards, laws and requirements of requisite agencies by employing appropriate systems/processes. Reports all non-compliances to Lab Supervisor or Lab Director.
Plays critical role in the rapid scale-up
Recruit, retain and develop strong performers to fully staff and work effectively in laboratory operations
Develops and maintains schedules to ensure availability of laboratory personnel (technologists, technicians and lab assistants) to complete forecasted laboratory test volume
Schedules adequate lab staff overtime as needed to meet operational needs
Develops and maintains schedule for “on-call” coverage for after-hours sample processing
Maintains a frequent presence on the lab floor in order to monitor and adjust daily workflows to support operation
Manages staff performance including appraisals, improvement plans, recommends annual compensation adjustments, and supports ongoing development of staff
Ensures that all lab staff is current with required training, competencies assessments and continuing education
Communicates with cross functional teams to achieve operational efficiencies
Reviews and revises department standard operating procedures
Continually assesses processes and creates action plans to make improvements
Monitors performance metrics to achieve throughput goals
Leads individuals and work groups to continuously improve performance by creating an environment that ensures application of quality principles and techniques to achieve desired outcomes
Serve as a positive role model and set the professional tone for the Department's reputation and performance. Lead by example to create and foster a culture consistent with the company values
Complete projects as assigned within designated timeframe
Bachelor’s degree required, prefer life sciences
Three or more years of supervisory experience in CLIA/CAP regulated laboratory
Successful track record to recruit, develop and retain a high performance team
Ability to learn a complex scientific laboratory assay, train others and hold them accountable for performance to standard operating procedures for that assay
Ability to work independently and demonstrate a high degree of personal & professional initiative
Able to develop creative, practical solutions that meet business objectives and solve problems
Strong project management skills including the ability to create, adapt and follow work plans
Strong skills in organization/time management; able to manage multiple competing priorities simultaneously
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Minimal travel <5%
